Bowel cancer at 26?

I have always struggles with bad bowels and IBS since I was 15 but within the past few months things have gotten worse, I have noticed more bleeding and mucus when going the toilet. I have been extremely fatigued (despite going the gym, this time last year I had so much energy but now I can’t even get through the same workout) and I have been having some stomach pains.

I went into hospital over the weekend due to some sharp pains down my left side that radiated into the hip/ovary. I had an ultrasound, urine test and bloods which showed nothing. They were looking for kidney stones but nothing indicated it from the tests so they ordered a CT. The CT didn’t show kidney stones but did show that there was “fuzziness” and inflammation on the lower left side of the bowel, which is exactly where the pain has been. The dr did offer to refer me to general surgery but the wait was hours and hours and I had been there 2 days.

I booked a GP appointment and have had to provide a stool sample but I am too young to be referred for a FIT or a colonoscopy at this stage. I still have pain in the lower left side of my stomach which does get worse when I go the toilet.
I also have so much mucus, yellow stool and I go to the toilet about 3/4 times a day.

I put my finger up and noticed there was a large mass type that is obstructing my bowels. I cannot get my finger passed it and instead had to go under and around. I suspect it could be piles HOWEVER, I don’t think I’d be having stomach pains and fatigue if I had piles.

Could someone offer some advice? I am being told I’m too young to have cancer but I have known many people with cancer younger than 30, infact the age is getting lower and lower.

Should I be concerned or does it sound like piles? It’s frustrating because my stomach still feels like I need a poo now and I have noticed my stomach makes very loud noises after eating too

looking forward to responses x

  • Hi Abbey,

I’m here to say hi! I’m 31 and a sufferer of Ulcerative Colitis. Your symptoms sound very similar to what I experience when I have a flare. I  as diagnosed at the age of 23 by colonoscopy.

UC is a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which can also be Crohn's Disease.

I would recommend doing some research. You are not too old for a colonoscopy and should be offered one with these symptoms.

Good news is - it's truly more likely to be IBD than cancer.

I've been where you are and know how awful the worry can be.

    Sending hugs x
