2cm Lump on my neck.

Hi,

I am a 20 year old male who has had a lump on my neck since the beginning of august after noticing lots of pain when swallowing liquids and foods. After contacting the GP i was then prescribed some antibiotics and soon after i was pain free but i still had the lump, weeks have gone by i contacted the GP again who was said that they thought it was benign and sent me for a simple FBC but became hesitant when thinking about a chest x-ray. After being contacted by the GP today and being told that i had an emergency chest x-ray booked within the following 3 days and that i will be seen by an ENT and booked for further investigations.  As a medical student my first thought after noticing the lump followed by some fatiuge, weight loss and night sweats that it was lymphoma or non- hodgkin's lymphoma but i'm not 100% confident.

My question to anyone willing to share their history is; Does my journey sound similar or am i overreacting? Any information will be great ;).

  • Hi TomR. Firstly I hope everything turns out ok and you get good results. Exactly this time last year I had a lump around the size of half a golf ball appear on side of my neck around the collar line, I went to my gp who diagnosed this as an ingrown hair, I questioned this as I suspected this was not the case. Anyway after anti biotics didn’t reduce the lump( what a surprise !) I decided to go private to ENT specialist as my Gp wasn’t going to red flag me. Long story short the next week I attended private Ent appointment and after camera up nose and bit of prodding I was immediately diagnosed with stage 3 tonsil cancer. 30 RT / 5 chemo later and I’m still here. Got officially told in remission exactly 7 to the day of diagnosis . I had no other symptoms whatsoever so I can’t comment on your swallow etc and as I say I hope you are fine but if you get the bad news don’t panic the NHS are brilliant with cancer treatment . Any questions just ask
