Irregular vaginal bleeding

I’m not sure where to post this as there wasn’t a specific category, but I’m HPV positive, last year my result was borderline cell changes and was confirmed with a colposcopy and biopsy.

Now my situation might be slightly unusual as I’m on a medication prescribed by my gyanecologist called Dienogest for suspected endo (not confirmed). I started this in April this year, had a 5-6 day period in May then some random irregular spotting a couple days in June and July and then August I had some heavier bleeding followed by some spotting for about a week.

I’m having a complete freakout anxiety-wise as just this last week (since the 22nd) my period showed up and since then I’ve been bleeding lightly. I thought it had stopped yesterday as it had mainly slowed to some very slight spotting but just now went to the toilet and am having some heavier spotting again. And just now I passed a tiny clot as well, which has me now completely paranoid.

This medication is meant to suppress menstrual bleeding and I felt most of the time it had been doing well since I’d not had my usual full on periods, but this last week has made me super concerned since it’s not stopping too. Is this likely to be hormonal or could this now have progressed to cervical cancer??

I’m absolutely beside myself worrying as I don’t see my gyn until November and my next smear also isn’t due until November. My colposcopy and biopsy was done at the end of January this year. Is it possible it can progress that quickly into something sinister???

I’ll see a GP as soon as I can but I can’t do that until Wednesday next week due to other commitments so I’m kind of upset and scared

  • Hello LuluLil,

I am so sorry you are feeling so stressed and you are very concerned about these latest symptoms. It's completely understandable that you are feeling worried and you've taken the right course of action in booking an appointment to see the GP - make sure you mention all your worries and concerns to your doctor. Try not to get too upset or scared and resist the urge to look anything up online if you can or it will make you anticipate the worst (and often least likely) scenario. You could perhaps ask your GP whether it might be possible to bring your smear tests forward a little and see if it can be done before November. Do mention your fears that it could have progressed quickly into something sinister and I hope your doctor will be able to explain things to you in detail and reassure you.

I hope you find out soon what is causing this irregular vaginal bleeding - it might be worth asking your gynaecologist or your GP whether this vaginal bleeding could be a side effect of the Dienogest as sometimes some medications can have undesired and unexpected side effects.

I also hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have experienced similar issues before and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you. I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi there, thank you for replying.

I know that a lot of bleeding issues turn out to be something unrelated which is reassuring at times, but I also have severe health anxiety so my mind tends to jump to the worst case scenario. Luckily the bleeding stopped a day or two ago. I'm hoping it was just related to the pills I'm taking and nothing to worry about too much. I won't be able to speak to my GP until Wednesday about this but I will make sure to do so especially as I will just endlessly worry otherwise.

Obviously I wish I could be reassured that things wouldn't progress that fast. I know cervical cancer and things are slow growing normally, but I always get paranoid. Hopefully I'll be able to discuss my concerns with my GP soon.

I know hormones can do all kinds of things to our bodies so it could just be that I guess, but thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm just hoping it's nothing to worry about!
