Sore Mole

Hi everyone, I hope this is ok to post.
I went to the doctors last week and saw the dermatologist gp that we have on site for a mole I’ve had as long as I can remember it had become slightly itchy but really sore( burning/stinging sensation). She looked at it through her derma-scope(if that’s what it’s called) and said she had no concerns at all and it was a “benign nevus” I just can’t get the thought out my mind that she’s missed something as it’s still really painful.
I do have really bad health anxiety and I went and saw a private dermatologist 6 weeks ago who did a full body check and again said nothing concerns her at all. I guess what I’m asking is would you take what she has said as ok or should I be going back again for another opinion?
Sorry for the long post
  • It's great to hear that your mole is no cause for concern although I'm sorry about the lingering worry and doubt you still have.

I know how hard this must be with your health anxiety, but as you've been given the same opinion by two dermatologists I think you can be reassured that the mole is o.k.

Having said that, if you are still experiencing symptoms in that area, then there's no harm discussing this issue with your GP once more.

I'm not sure if the dermatologists fully explained what a benign naevus is, but if they didn't and you feel knowing more about it may help put your mind at ease, then I hope this information we have on our website will help.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position will stop by soon to offer their thoughts and advice but we also have a team of nurses you can talk to on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

  • Hi,

I think, if a private dermatologist & your GP trained in dermatology have checked your mole & are happy it's benign, there is a very good chance it's fine. The dermascope shows any cell changes in the mole & it seems that your mole wasn't presenting any cell changes.

Moles can sometimes become itchy/sore due to a skin infection under the mole or an ingrown hair. If you are still anxious I suggest you photograph your mole every few weeks to watch out for any changes - if there are any you can then use the photos for another GP appointment. Or you can download a skin check app which will show if your mole is of concern. If it flags a concern you can go back to your GP again.

    Good luck
