Swollen thyroid and lump in throat

I'm a 33 year old female. On Tuesday I went to see my mum who asked me what was wrong with my neck as it looked like it had a lump in it, I hadn't noticed it myself and could definitely feel something there when I checked.

When I managed to get a GP appointment on Friday she said that my thyroid is swollen to around 3.7cm on the left side of my throat, in the middle of my throat there's also a large lump which measures 5.5cm. I had a baby around 4 months ago and had a tubal ligation during my c section, following this I've experienced night sweats, severe itchiness and hot flushes which I'd put down to my hormones, I also ended my pregnancy down around 1.5 stone from my first pregnancy appointment.

I know that these can be bad symptoms, especially with the lumps and my family has quite a bad history with both Hodgkin's and non Hodgkin's lymphoma. The GP has made an urgent referral to a head and neck specialist and I was told I would be seen within two weeks.

I guess I'm just wondering if there is any chance my other symptoms may not be linked to the lump and could actually be down to hormones? Also what tests would a head and neck specialist actually do?

Any insight would be really appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hello Lillybeth

I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with some health concerns at the moment. It's understandable that you may be feeling anxious and worried about what this swelling and lump may be.

It's good to know that you've already seen your GP and that they've referred you to see a specialist. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your appointment and when you see the team they will be able to give you some reassurance.

If you'd like to chat things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can ahead of your appointment.
