Possible womb cancer ?

Recently has a transvaginal scan which showed a 5.1 endometrial thickening after menopause. Specialist tried to do two procedures to get a biopsy but they couldn’t get through the cervix. Now have to go to hospital as an in patient. Really scared. Has anyone had similar experiences ?

  • Yes, twice! First time all good, just polyps, all biopsies clear (2019). This year all womb biopsies clear but atypical hyperplasia (precancerous cells) found in one polyp…had a hysterectomy last Monday, home Tuesday to recover, now need to wait for biopsy results as 40% of hyperplasia is found to actually contain cancer after hysterectomy.  My lining was 7.6mm in 2019 and 8.3mm this year…I also had postmenopausal bleeding on both occasions.

Hope everything comes back ok for you x

  • Thank you so much for answering x I thought this might be unusual and it’s quite lonely thinking about it constantly. It’s good to know there are lovely people out there happy to share their experiences. I am very grateful x

  • I hope all goes well with your recovery x

  • You didn’t say if you are postmenopausal or if you had any bleeding, both of which always require further investigation with an ultrasound and then depending on womb thickness a biopsy and/or hysteroscopy..my first polyps were in a difficult position so I had to have a general when they removed them…this time they were removed as an outpatient at the second attempt, the first time I was sent home due to high blood pressure..second time they were removed successfully..when hyperplasia was found I was told the recommended treatment would be a hysterectomy and the I was sent home from the first try as my blood sugars were too high…advised to wait three months, get blood sugar down and in the interim they took another womb biopsy (normal) and fitted a mirena coil to try and stop anything progressing.  As I said I’m at home now recovering, I’m very bruised, probably because I’m fat, I’m also recovering from a broken left arm…honestly 2023 can do one as far as I’m concerned, I’ll be glad to see the back of it!

  • It’s pointless telling you not to worry because you will, I would say stay away from Dr Google, he should be banished to outer space.

Most women don’t have cancer but even if they do it’s usually found very early and a hysterectomy is often the only treatment needed…

  • That sounds so awful, so many things happening in one year x Yes I am post menopausal and I had one episode of slight pink discharge (one morning and nothing since). They tried to do a hysterosopy twice in outpatients (with and without a camera) but couldn’t get through the cervix, apparently because of atrophy. It was so painful. So they’ve said I need to go under anaesthetic. The specialist said she couldn’t see any bleeding. It’s just so worrying and I can’t really talk to anyone about it at home without getting upset. So thank you so much for replying x

  • I’ve spent days on Google which I don’t think has helped. I have just been reading all the possible outcomes and convinced myself it’s going to be bad.

  • I did the same and I’m still doing it now, I think everybody does it, it’s just natural to worry about things like this..I’ve probably got another 5 weeks until I get my results as they usually take longer after a hysterectomy…I’m trying hard not to think about it but not being able to do anything for another couple of weeks means I’ve lots of time on my hands, I’m still very sore and bruised as well, was supposed to go to Crete before my op but my broken arm meant we had to cancel it…I’m a right mardy one at the moment lol

  • Five weeks seems a long time to get results but I guess that’s normal? I’m due to go to Rhodes in a couple of weeks and I’m not going to cancel that. Work has been so busy and with all this stress I just need a few days to have a change of scenery. I’m so sorry you had to cancel yours :( x

  • Result times can vary, in 2019 results were back in. 2-3 weeks, this year it was just over 2 weeks for the first lot then almost 6 to the results with the hyperplasia and then 5 weeks for the last womb biopsy…after a full hysterectomy they do quite intensive investigations, or so I’m told, so results often take longer.

Thankfully we had a week in Corfu with our grandsons in August so it’s not like we haven’t been away…the week in Crete was to recover from Corfu! But a week after coming home I tripped over a kerb and fell into a low wall, breaking my upper arm in 3 places…they wanted to operate but understood when I told them hysterectomy had to take priority…I’m back to fracture clinic next week and will probably be referred for surgery then…happy days…said nobody ever, but it needs fixing as it’s still hurting and I can’t do much with my left hand (luckily I’m right handed)..

Will you be having your procedure before you go away?
