I have an appointment following a LLETZ: what questions should I ask?

Hello,

Thanks for reading this, I have an apt following a LLETZ and I need some help knowing what questions I should ask.

Background:

Mid 30s, have attended smear tests every three years since 23yo.

This year, had a feeling something not right, pain, bleeding and horrible lower back pain so went in a little earlier than due.

Results were HPV+ with abnormal unidentified squamous cells. I'd been CIN1 a decade ago and it went away so I expected same but was called to colposcopy clinic. I had a  chat with Dr about symptoms, the kindest Dr I might add.

A week later I attended and had colposcopy, LLETZ, D&C with hysteroscopy under GA (discussed in advance may do all these at same time)  They didn't tell me much after the procedure just await results.

Recovery was a lot of sleeping and 4 weeks of bleeding. This week I have follow up apt so I rang to see if results are back yet or if my apt will be rescheduled. (There's a backlog for results I believe) I asked if a nurse could call me back. A nurse called back but I was asleep (I'm sick with cold/flu )

The nurse told me results are back and LLETZ showed CIN3 no breakthrough or no clear breakthrough something like that and consultant wants to have a chat so come in for apt and then nurse was gone.

I was half asleep so didn't ask what does breakthrough mean...

Now I'm wondering what else I need to ask.

What is breakthrough?

A decade ago when it was CIN1 I thought that's no biggie there's room for error there ....but now with CIN3 I'm thinking that's not much room for error...Is CIN3 ever mixed up with early cancer? How far apart are they? Is one ever confused for the other? What's next?

Can CIN3 cause back ache and bleeding?

Ill see consultant soon, what questions should I ask?

Many thanks.

  • Hello Waitingroom2023,

I hope you won't mind I've slightly edited your title to include more background information so that members of our community who may have been through this before and had an appointment following a LLETZ can spot your post easily and share their insights with you. They may have some thoughts on what questions to ask based on their personal experiences. I am not sure myself what this breakthrough means but this is definitely a question you could ask the consultant. Write down all those questions that pop into your mind so that you don't forget them. There is information on our website on the LLETZ which I hope you will find useful and I thought I would also share with you this page from our website which explains what abnormal cervical cells are. It mentions that CIN 3 means that "the full thickness of the lining covering the cervix has abnormal cells" but these changes are not cancer and "in some women, if not treated, these changes could develop into cancer in the future" so it's important to get the treatment you need to get this sorted.

Feel free to give our nurses a call if you would like to ask them any questions on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. I hope that your appointment with the consultant goes well and that they answer all your questions so that you feel reassured and know what the next steps might be.

Many members of our forum will have been through this before and I hope that they will be along shortly to share their post LLETZ experiences with you.

    Best wishes,
