Waiting for bone marrow

Hi all. I’m new here so hi. My Dad is 75 and currently waiting on bone marrow results. It started about a month ago when he saw the gp due to being short of breath, tired and incredibly pale. He had blood tests and a chest X-ray and was sent straight to hospital with critically low hemoglobin and low platelets. He had 3 units of blood that day and platelets. Since then he’s needed a transfusion every 4-8 days. He had a ct scan and a bone marrow 3 weeks ago and has been told his results will now be another week. I’m just worrying that the longer the bone marrow takes the more likely it’s going to be bad news, especially since he was originally told 2 weeks and it’s now looking like at least 4 weeks. So I’m just hoping to hear from others who have been through this or are going through it. The wait is really hard.

  • Hi Willow and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear your dad is anxiously awaiting his bone marrow results. I know this must be very stressful but hopefully it won't be much longer now.

I'm sure some of our members who have been in a similar situation to your dad will be along soon to share their experiences and advice but in the meantime if you'd like to talk any of this through with one of cancer nurses, you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We're thinking of you and your dad Willow and will have our fingers crossed for a good outcome.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
