Urgent referral for breast lump

Hi all,

I’m new here, hope you’re all doing ok - thanks for reading my post.

it’s 2.40am and having real trouble sleeping at the moment as the panic has set in - I’ve been ok up until now.

I noticed some lumpy areas in my left breast and got an appointment last Friday at the docs, who have referred me to the breast clinic under the 2 week period (still awaiting an appointment).

in 2021, I found a lumpy area in my right breast in the inner lower quadrant and had a ultrasound which revealed it was a lipoma. I mentioned this to the doc last Friday who didn’t examine this breast. I have now realised that what I assumed was the lipoma in the same area is now possibly an additional hard lump and I’m now worrying myself silly - I don’t remember the lipoma feeling so hard but have assumed for a long time it was the original lipoma.

I know it’s worth awaiting my appointment at the breast clinic  rather than going back to the doctors as they can’t do anything, it’s just trying to manage the anxiety and the horrible spiralling thoughts.

please let me know if you have any tips for handling the worry for anyone else in the same boat - thanks for reading my early morning ramblings!

love to you all x

  • Hi Spider,

Thanks for the update. It sounds as if your GP doesn't suspect anything untoward, which is good news. However, I am glad to hear that she has referred you to the breast clinic, just to make absolutely certain.

Please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

Fingers crossed for more good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi,

that's great news but as others have said glad to see they are getting it checked to be on the safe side. Hopefully you can try and relax a little more now you’ve at least seen your GP.

let us know how your getting on and we’re here if you need us xx

  • Booked in at the clinic tomorrow morning. Do they always take a biopsy or is it dependant on the initial mammogram?

  • Hi Spider,

I'm glad to hear that your clinic appointment is tomorrow.  You will be likely to have a chat about your symptoms with the consultant, before a physical examination of your breasts. After that you will probably be sent for a mammogram and an ultrasound. Not all lumps are cancerous. Some are benign cysts or due to fibrous or hormonal changes. It is sometimes obvious from the shape of the lump that it is not sinister, in which case you may not need a biopsy, but if there is the slightest chance that it could be cancerous, then you are likely to get a biopsy. If you have a biopsy, you will have to wait 1-2 weeks to get the results of this. It is the biopsy which determines whether or not there is any cancer present.

I shall be thinking of you tomorrow. Here's hoping that your GP is right and there is nothing to worry about.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Spider2023, glad to hear of your appointment tomorrow.

I know when I was there most other people only seemed to have a mammogram or ultrasound, as Jolamine said they will only do a biopsy if they feel what they see/find may present as suspicious, but again if they do a biopsy remember there’s still a high chance that it will be non cancerous and you’ll be absolutely fine.

try not to worry and hope everything goes ok for you, let us know how you get on. We’re all here for you xx

  • Hello, I'm new here, I read through this entire thread yesterday before deciding I should maybe post. Sorry to hear about those of you who have had bad news the last couple of months. I had an appointment at at the GP (although I think I saw a "Physician's Assistant" rather than a GP) on Tuesday as I found a lump on my left breast. Well I say on the breast, it is in a weird place, basically right underneath in the crease, where the breast joins to my chest. It feels firm and I can't tell if it moves or not really, the skin over the top obviously moves and I can't really work out if the lump is moving too. PA said she didn't think it felt like anything nasty but for reassurance has done the urgent referral thing anyway. I had a text Wednesday morning confirming they'd be in touch but as yet, no phone call and I'm feeling so jittery about it all. Trying to keep busy etc but I would just like to know really. I'm 35, and have two young kids. My husband is being good, although is sort of relentlessly positive which I am finding a bit annoying although I know he is just trying to stop me panicking. I haven't told my mum even though I normally tell her everything. I just don't want to worry her unnecessarily. She has lost a lot of people to breast cancer and also is a retired GP so will know more than I do. Anyway, any tips on how to cope with this waiting....? Sorry for long post.

  • Hey Mamabird,

Welcome to the forum (we’re a friendly bunch here). Sorry that you find yourself on this forum, but I’ll start by saying you’ve 100% done the right thing by going and getting yourself checked out and referred.

The waiting around for the appointment is definitely the worst part. What I will suggest is doing everything you would normally do if you weren’t being referred - keep any social plans you have and keep yourself really busy. Getting out for walks is also really good, getting some fresh air and soaking up nature (if the weather’s not pouring of course). I also tried to do some YouTube exercise classes too which were good.

I understand that you don’t want to worry your mum, but do consider having a chat with her if the worry is getting too much.

also, focus on a good bedtime routine - perhaps a relaxing bath with spa music playing and get lost in a good book before you go to sleep, to slow down the mind and assist with winding down.

I hope these little tips help, and do reach out to chat if you need to. We are always here. Take care of yourself during this time xx

  • I'd just like to say it has been reassuring speaking to the lovely people on this group. It's never a waste of time getting checked out. I was also reluctant to tell my Mum but it turns out she also got the same thing about my age. Just got back from the clinic and I am happy to say that there is nothing abnormal. The hospital were brilliant and the process was very smooth. Had an ultrasound in the end which was all clear.

  • Fab news, so pleased for you that everything is ok   xx
