Urgent referral for breast lump

Hi all,

I’m new here, hope you’re all doing ok - thanks for reading my post.

it’s 2.40am and having real trouble sleeping at the moment as the panic has set in - I’ve been ok up until now.

I noticed some lumpy areas in my left breast and got an appointment last Friday at the docs, who have referred me to the breast clinic under the 2 week period (still awaiting an appointment).

in 2021, I found a lumpy area in my right breast in the inner lower quadrant and had a ultrasound which revealed it was a lipoma. I mentioned this to the doc last Friday who didn’t examine this breast. I have now realised that what I assumed was the lipoma in the same area is now possibly an additional hard lump and I’m now worrying myself silly - I don’t remember the lipoma feeling so hard but have assumed for a long time it was the original lipoma.

I know it’s worth awaiting my appointment at the breast clinic  rather than going back to the doctors as they can’t do anything, it’s just trying to manage the anxiety and the horrible spiralling thoughts.

please let me know if you have any tips for handling the worry for anyone else in the same boat - thanks for reading my early morning ramblings!

love to you all x

  • Hi Jolamine,

I’ve just had my drain removed today, so no more waiting in for the nurse each day- Hooray!! I already feel more comfortable without it. Last night was better in terms of sleep too, so things are definitely looking up. I had some more visitors this morning and am feeling more like myself. The main thing that’s bothering me now is not being able to wash my hair, but that’s a minor issue in the whole scheme of things! xx

  • You will feel better every day ,I had bilateral mastectomies last year and my husband had to wash my hair and back .Keep doing your exercises too and you will be able to do all that pretty soon. Sleeping on my back was an issue but I

just put my pillows into a V shape and that helped a lot .xxx

  • Thank you- I’m already surprised at how good I feel, although my walk this afternoon has exhausted me. I’m looking forward to being able to have a shower, but that won’t be for another week yet- in the meantime I’m having shallow baths. I’m going to the hairdresser on Tuesday for a wash and blow dry with my usual hairdresser, which will feel like a treat.
I have a v-shaped pillow that I’m using at night. I’m not getting a great deal of sleep, but I’m sure it will improve xx

  • Hi GoonerGirl,

I'm delighted to hear that your drain has been removed - this should leave you with a lot more freedom of movement. It is also good to hear that you managed to sleep better too. I know what you mean about not being able to wash your hair - this won't be for long and I'm sure that you'll enjoy the wash and blow dry at your hairdressers on Tuesday. I used a small heart-shaped cushion, which I could pop under either arm after surgery.

Don't overdo it with the walking, if it's tiring you too much, but do still try to get out for a short time.

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi. I am 38 and found a long smooth lump in my upper left breast near my underarm. Didn't notice it before but I check them fairly often. It started as dull pains in just the left side. Considering I don't get periods I can't put it down to cyclical pain. Contacted my GP on Friday and I have an apt with them this Tues afternoon. Google is my worst enemy so I'm just going to stop. I can understand how people's thoughts spiral. I have 2 young boys to look after.

  • Hi Spider,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms, but you have done the right thing by getting these checked out. You are quite right to avoid Google - it would have you in a 6' box with the slightest sniffle. It is unusual to have pain with breast cancer and not all lumps turn out to be cancerous. Many are benign cysts or fibroadenoma. It is a fact that 80% of people who are referred to the breast clinic, will not get a cancer diagnosis, so the odds are still on your side.

This is always a worrying time and our over-active imaginations don't help, as they can take us to some dark places. I shall be thinking of you on Tuesday and home that all goes well.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hey Spider,

Welcome to the chat - sorry to hear you have found a lump, but you’re doing the right thing by being proactive and getting it checked out by your GP.

Google is just the absolute worst - the brain craves comfort so we seek out answers to try and reassure and end up making ourselves feel a whole lot worse. Thanks a lot Google! Great that you’re aware and you’ve decided to stop searching - well done!

The chances are that the area of concern is nothing to worry about and may be something totally benign. But you’re doing the right thing getting it looked at. The people on this forum are absolutely lovely and we’re always happy to chat if you need us.

In the meantime, try and keep yourself busy and do nice things for yourself. Best of luck for the appointment next week - do let us know how you get on.

    take care!

    xx

  • Spider

    good luck

stay here for support if you need it lovely xx

  • Evening everyone. I had my initial GP appointment this afternoon which has put my mind at ease for now. She said that it feels like a fibrous texture and nothing that immediately feels sinister. To be sure I have been put on the 2 week list to double check. Xx
