Urgent referral for breast lump

Hi all,

I’m new here, hope you’re all doing ok - thanks for reading my post.

it’s 2.40am and having real trouble sleeping at the moment as the panic has set in - I’ve been ok up until now.

I noticed some lumpy areas in my left breast and got an appointment last Friday at the docs, who have referred me to the breast clinic under the 2 week period (still awaiting an appointment).

in 2021, I found a lumpy area in my right breast in the inner lower quadrant and had a ultrasound which revealed it was a lipoma. I mentioned this to the doc last Friday who didn’t examine this breast. I have now realised that what I assumed was the lipoma in the same area is now possibly an additional hard lump and I’m now worrying myself silly - I don’t remember the lipoma feeling so hard but have assumed for a long time it was the original lipoma.

I know it’s worth awaiting my appointment at the breast clinic  rather than going back to the doctors as they can’t do anything, it’s just trying to manage the anxiety and the horrible spiralling thoughts.

please let me know if you have any tips for handling the worry for anyone else in the same boat - thanks for reading my early morning ramblings!

love to you all x

  • Morning all

Same as you all went to see doctor on Friday had letter today for breat clinic week today

Is ut normal for appointment to come so fast

I found one lump in right upper side of breast but during doctor exam found a further 2 in arm pit can not get it off my brain and had a melt down friday night

  • Hey Missty,

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you’re having a tough time with worry.

like others have said, it’s all very normal to receive your referral very quickly. I received a referral review letter in the post the day after my doctors appointment, but then it took a few weeks to get my appointment (due to the waitlist in my area and recent strikes) whereas others received their appointments much quicker than me.

I’m pleased you’ve managed to get an appointment so soon, but please don’t read anything into this.

it’s incredibly hard to focus on anything else when you’re so anxious, but honestly, having a good cry and getting those emotions out are so important. I hope you have a good support network around you - do try and keep yourself busy if you can. Watch a few episodes of something to take your mind off things or take yourself out for a lovely walk somewhere pretty and soak up nature.

Let us know how you get on, we are all here to chat anytime xx

  • I’ve just googled it, and now know what triple negative means!! It also now makes sense of something in my letter from the hospital!

  • Lebel

glad you had your mri. And it went well

but at least with triple negative you don’t need to take hormone therapy afterwards, my bestie had triple negative, she’s finished everything now and doing absolutely amazing you will too xxx

  • Well, I’m now at the hospital, having unexpectedly been called in for another ultrasound. That doesn’t fill me with confidence that all is as they thought! Last time they said they could see two lumps, but couldn’t see what was going on in between as the tissue was dense. I’m wondering whether the MRI showed something going on in that region and that they are going to biopsy that- but of course I have no idea!

  • Let’s hope it’s just a check xx Let us know how it goes xx

  • Awww no I really hope it’s all ok for you and nothing to worry about, my breast care nurse told me they are more sensitive and can pick up other lumps and not to be too alarmed if I get called back, however I would be panicking like you if they  do that. I have everything crossed for you and hope your ok.

let us know how you get on xx

  • Thank you- as you suggested, the MRI showed more very small lesions- the doctor said it was like a little daisy chain. They wanted to biopsy the ones furthest from the biggest lump, and make sure they knew how big the segment to removed needs to be. The other lesions are really small and wouldn’t really be visible to the surgeon.

It turns out the MRI also showed a cyst on my liver, which I may be called back about. I’ve been told they are common and I may even have been worn with it- just another thing to worry about, in case I should run out of worries!!

  • That was supposed to say BORN with it !!

  • Aww ok so did you have your biopsy today too? Do u need to wait for those results before they will book in your surgery?

I missed a phone call from the hospital at 5:30 tonight, they left a voicemail saying my oncologist needed to book in some further tests and to ring them back but I was too late, I’m now worried they might have picked something else up on my MRI like you, hopefully they will ring back in the morning.

all this waiting and tests is testing me.

hopefully your liver will be fine and it’s maybe just the norm for you.

    xx

  • Yes- I had biopsies in two more places. I’m really hoping they will boom in my surgery still as the waiting is driving me mad!!

I think the MRI is so sensitive it picks up every little things, but I guess that’s good really. If I have loads of tiny lesions I’d rather them know they’ve taken them all out than find a few months down the line I’m back in the same position. I hope your call back is nothing to be too concerned about.

Yes, hopefully the liver thing is nothing of concern. Of course I’ve already consulted Dr Google, but it didn’t cause me any alarm!!

  • Yes very true best they know everything now so they can get it all at once. Hopefully they will book it anyway as the only thing that would change is how much they remove, as long as the booked it for sufficient time for results I don’t see why they wouldn’t.

we should all have learned by now not to consult dr Google but we do anyway lol. that’s good tho best you focus on one thing at a time xx

  • Yes- that’s what I’m thinking. I’m trying to see it all in a positive light. Tomorrow I will hopefully know more as regards the way ahead.

I hope you manage to get your extra tests booked in tomorrow. I’m sure the doctors will tell you what it’s all about when you’re there- it’s just a bit alarming when you get the call xx

  • Hi GoonerGirl,

I'm sure that you feel nervous just now, but by this time tomorrow, you should know exactly what is planned for you. I shall be thinking of you tomorrow and hope that you finally get the answers that you are looking for.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine,

I’ll be glad to get this appointment over with and hopefully will know the way ahead xx

  • Just out of the hospital having had some less than positive news. The MRI showed a much bigger area of cancer, and the MDT have decided I should have a full mastectomy, even though the surgeon thought she could still do a mammoplasty. I’m gutted. I was asked about immediate reconstruction (own body tissue or implant) but have decided on no reconstruction.
I came out of the last meeting feeling positive. Now I’m feeling the complete opposite.

Last time it was suggested I wouldn’t need chemo- now I’m being told I might. That was my worst fear.

  • Oh , I’m so sorry to hear your sad news, you must be devastated ! Please don’t make any immediate decisions regarding reconstruction , take a few days to let the news sink in first. Sending a big hug xx

  • Oh no I’m so sorry youve had bad news :(

On the positive at least they know the full extent and are doing what they believe is best, I know it must be hard I would feel exactly the same. I know when they changed my surgery to chemo I was devastated because you get your head around something then they change it :(

please let it all sink in before making any decisions, is your surgery still planned for the same date?

what made you decide against the reconstruction?

sending you lots of love and hugs xx

  • Thank you. The surgeon did say I could decide on reconstruction later if I changed my mind. I opted against an implant because it won’t look the same anyway, so I didn’t see the point. The other option, using my own body tissue for reconstruction, is an I hair operation with long recovery time. I don’t want that. I’m self employed and I want to get the surgery done, recover, and get on with my life! It’s not as though I’m young and am planning in flashing my body around… however, I’m still gutted to be making that decision.

    xx

  • Awwww I’m sorry you’re having make such a hard choice when you weren’t expecting it, at least you have the option if you decide to do later on.

totally understand just wanting it over with, hopefully this will be the last bit of bad news and you can now get on with what’s planned without any other hiccups.

    xx
