Urgent referral for breast lump

Hi all,

I’m new here, hope you’re all doing ok - thanks for reading my post.

it’s 2.40am and having real trouble sleeping at the moment as the panic has set in - I’ve been ok up until now.

I noticed some lumpy areas in my left breast and got an appointment last Friday at the docs, who have referred me to the breast clinic under the 2 week period (still awaiting an appointment).

in 2021, I found a lumpy area in my right breast in the inner lower quadrant and had a ultrasound which revealed it was a lipoma. I mentioned this to the doc last Friday who didn’t examine this breast. I have now realised that what I assumed was the lipoma in the same area is now possibly an additional hard lump and I’m now worrying myself silly - I don’t remember the lipoma feeling so hard but have assumed for a long time it was the original lipoma.

I know it’s worth awaiting my appointment at the breast clinic  rather than going back to the doctors as they can’t do anything, it’s just trying to manage the anxiety and the horrible spiralling thoughts.

please let me know if you have any tips for handling the worry for anyone else in the same boat - thanks for reading my early morning ramblings!

love to you all x

  • Thanks Ladies for responding and the advice. Will try and get a last minute cancellation appointment and also get a cost for private.

When she said 7 weeks I thought oh maybe they have referred it as routine but then they said urgent appointment.

Am not sure though if we're I am they have the 2ww, then urgent and then routine.

But yes am trying to just keep the GPs word in the back of my mind and the fact she said she's not concerned. Xx

  • It may be just harmless lumpy breasts linked to your cycle ( don’t know how old you are) but you her women are prone to them also harmless cysts xx let us know how you get on . It cost me £195 for a private consultation

  • Thanks LCR I rang the hospital again and it's definitely an urgent appointment I advised am free for late minute cancellation so they have put that on the notes.

Am 34 and am sure it will be something as harmless as that. Just the waiting is hard for that reassurance.

Will give the private clinic up here a call too.

Will let you know when I manage to get an appointment

    Take care xx

  • Hey S,

Welcome to the forum! sorry you find yourself here, but I hope you’ll find it supportive & informative during your wait.

7 weeks is a crazy long time to have to wait for a your appointment. Chances are it’s nothing to worry about and is something totally harmless like a cyst or fatty lump - doesn’t help the brain though when you know there’s a long period of waiting.

I agree it’s a good idea to let the hospital know you’re open to last min cancellations (if you are) or investigate the private route if possible. It’s always such a worry time, so do reach out to chat anytime.

I recently got the all clear for my lumps in both breasts which were diagnosed as fat necrosis (benign) so hopefully that helps to reassure a little that much of the time, it’s something completely benign or hormonal changes.

    Xx

  • Hi Sandpiper899

Thank so much for thr welcome.

I know one minute am thinking to myself oh don't be so silly its nothing and the next am thinking the worst. Which I suppose is only normal under the circumstances. Am gobsmacked on the wait times but my hospital don't have the best track record with things as it it so it doesn't surprise me if am being honest.

I have alot going on at the minute so am hoping that will keep me busy and help me not think too much about it.

Am so happy you had a good outcome from your own lumps and it does put my mind at ease that not all lumps are sinister. Am sure I will have a similar outcome and it will be nothing of concern

    Xxx

  • Hi S_1989,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you have such a long wait for an appointment, but glad to hear that you have made it clear that you're available for cancellations. Some areas seems to have long waiting lists at the moment, but cancellations do come up quite frequently. The problem with going private is that you will probably have another wait, if you need any further treatment and need to get back into the NHS system. I do hope that something comes up soon.

Not all lumps are cancerous .Many turn out to be benign cysts, fibrous or hormonal changes. It is a fact that only 2 people, out of every 10 who attend the breast clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis.

Even if the worst should happen and you do get one, treatments have come a long way in recent years. I lost my mum to secondary breast cancer. Since then, I have had 2 bouts within a year of each other. There was just no comparison between the diagnosis, treatment and after care, which mum and I experienced. I am still living life to the full, 14 years down the line.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine

Thank you for your response. I really am hoping I can get a last minute cancellation. I have been trying not to think about it too much and so far this weekend I have been fine about it.

Just keep telling myself that it's probably nothing to worry about as I know most people do have a positive outcome so it is reassuring.

Am sorry to hear about you lodt your mum to it and you yourself have had to go through this twice but so happy you have overcome it and living life to the full.

Will keep you posted when I do receive my appointment xxx

  • Hi Missty good luck for your appointment today fingers crossed for you xx
