Urgent referral for breast lump

Hi all,

I’m new here, hope you’re all doing ok - thanks for reading my post.

it’s 2.40am and having real trouble sleeping at the moment as the panic has set in - I’ve been ok up until now.

I noticed some lumpy areas in my left breast and got an appointment last Friday at the docs, who have referred me to the breast clinic under the 2 week period (still awaiting an appointment).

in 2021, I found a lumpy area in my right breast in the inner lower quadrant and had a ultrasound which revealed it was a lipoma. I mentioned this to the doc last Friday who didn’t examine this breast. I have now realised that what I assumed was the lipoma in the same area is now possibly an additional hard lump and I’m now worrying myself silly - I don’t remember the lipoma feeling so hard but have assumed for a long time it was the original lipoma.

I know it’s worth awaiting my appointment at the breast clinic  rather than going back to the doctors as they can’t do anything, it’s just trying to manage the anxiety and the horrible spiralling thoughts.

please let me know if you have any tips for handling the worry for anyone else in the same boat - thanks for reading my early morning ramblings!

love to you all x

  • Morning all

Same as you all went to see doctor on Friday had letter today for breat clinic week today

Is ut normal for appointment to come so fast

I found one lump in right upper side of breast but during doctor exam found a further 2 in arm pit can not get it off my brain and had a melt down friday night

  • Hey Missty,

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you’re having a tough time with worry.

like others have said, it’s all very normal to receive your referral very quickly. I received a referral review letter in the post the day after my doctors appointment, but then it took a few weeks to get my appointment (due to the waitlist in my area and recent strikes) whereas others received their appointments much quicker than me.

I’m pleased you’ve managed to get an appointment so soon, but please don’t read anything into this.

it’s incredibly hard to focus on anything else when you’re so anxious, but honestly, having a good cry and getting those emotions out are so important. I hope you have a good support network around you - do try and keep yourself busy if you can. Watch a few episodes of something to take your mind off things or take yourself out for a lovely walk somewhere pretty and soak up nature.

Let us know how you get on, we are all here to chat anytime xx

  • This is exactly how I feel it seems the longest two weeks waiting for the appointment. Hope you have the result you want have everything crossed for you xx

  • Hi GoonerGirl hope your okay x

  • My husband was withdrawn at first and not really saying a lot. Then he said to me that he is going to be strong for me and I said I don’t need you to be strong I need you to be normal. It’s crap and worrying I need someone to go through this with. I cried and so did he whilst hugging each other. Think it was what we both needed we had held it together all day for the kids so this happened whilst we were in bed. Hope you get lots of support as you need it xx

  • Hi GoonerGirl sorry I get a bit confused with the messages think I am a bit behind. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis but glad that there is treatment and am I right in thinking stage 1 is the lower stage don’t really understand it all. I am glad that it hasn’t spread I really worry about this when I go x

  • Hi Lebell sending you a big hug. What is a receptor? If you don’t mind me asking. And what were you diagnosed with as they are starting chemo first? Sorry if you have put this in a message somewhere else getting a bit confused with messages think I’m a bit behind x

  • Thank you I will look into them been phoning a few they are quite expensive as they only do the mammogram but if need ultrasound biopsy then that is a extra cost

  • I'm not to far I'm Hertfordshire

They have give me nothing bar message saying that it has been cancelled no other date I may wait till Tuesday/Wednesday when strikes are over and see if another appointment is available and a date take it from there x

  • Hi Ruby,

No problem- I’m the same in trying to keep up with everything and everyone! My understanding is that stage 1 is the where the cancer hasn’t spread, which means less intensive treatment required. Hopefully surgery will get rid of it, and that is followed up by radiotherapy to make sure. The breast care nurse and the doctor were both brilliant at explaining everything to me, so don’t worry about not understanding everything. Like you, my worry was about how it may have spread- I was convinced it was cancer, so it was a case of how bad it might be.

  • Thank you for the explanation. So glad that you will get rid of it with the less invasive treatment. I guess I am just asking questions to try and prepare myself for whatever outcome I may have. I have less than a week to wait now till my day in hospital my dr thinks it’s cancer I could tell from how she responded to me at the surgery. So only time will tell. I have e pcr passed for you

  • Hi GoonerGirl,

Although we all dread a cancer diagnosis, knowing what we are dealing with is so much easier to cope with, than the unknown situation you've been in for the past couple of weeks. I'm glad to hear that you've told your kids now and hope that your daughter can cope with this.

You're on the road to get rid of this now and that's a much better place to be.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
