Mole on thigh

My adult daughter showed me a mole on her leg - speckled and a bit red so I said to make appointment with GP.  GP said looked ok but sent pics to hospital then today she has received a txt to say please come in tomorrow to discuss hospital response.  Now I'm so worried that she might have  a melanoma- - has anyone else had this happen?

  • Hi Sarah,

Please don't panic. It sounds like your GP may have been either asked to keep an eye on her mole or to refer her so that a dermatologist can check it out. If she is referred, 75% of referrals result in a clean bill of health in that the mole is benign or it's dysplastic (precancerous). So the odds that it's melanoma are very small. The good thing to focus on is that her GP has been proactive quickly & she is getting it checked out. If it does to turn out to be melanoma, most patients have caught it early and it can be treated successfully. Good luck to your daughter and please let us know how she gets on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thankyou Angie I will keep you posted xx

  • just to let you know it was a relief - they said to keep an eye on it and hospital not worried and think the little black spots in the mole are hair follicles which are inflamed.  They said make sure you wear sun cream of high factor over it and come back if it changes - so relieved! x

  • That's great to know. Tell her, in order to help notice any possible changes, to take a photo of it today - place a ruler next to it to show the size. Then again take photos once a month and it will be easier to compare them. If no change after 6 months she can just check every 6 months.
