Breast lump referral-scared

Hi everyone,

I am 38 and found a lump in my left breast about 4 weeks ago, I only checked as I was getting an accessional throb which made me have a prod around. Fast forward to today I finally went to the GP, she felt it straight away but isn’t sure if it’s one lump or a few smaller ones together, it’s not painful but a bit uncomfortable when prodding. she has put me on a two week referral but I’m now terrified thinking the worst. One minute I’m convinced of the worst and the next I feel like I’m being totally paranoid and it will be nothing. Anyone now waiting on a referral, outcomes or stories. Thanks

  • Hi Lebell,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear that you have found a lump in your breast and fully understand how worrying this wait can be. Our over-vivid imaginations are are our worst enemy at this time! You have done the right thing in getting this investigated. The two week, or urgent referral, is normal if there is the slightest possibility of cancer. Nobody can tell this until you have some tests carried out and the breast clinic is geared up to take these types of tests. The 3 main tests carried out are mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. The mammogram and ultrasound can detect a lump, but it is only the biopsy which can determine whether or not there is any cancer present. All of these tests are usually carried out on  your first visit. If you have had a biopsy, it usually takes another 1-2 weeks for the results to come back. Most women under 40 don't get a mammogram, because younger breasts tend to be denser and don't show up so well with this test. However, as you are pretty close to 40, you may or may not have a mammogram.

Having said all this, only 2 people out of every 10, who attend the breast clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis. Not all lumps are cancerous and many turn out to be benign cysts or fibrous changes. There can also be some hormonal changes. I have had three suspected bouts of breast cancer - no pain, I just found the lumps in the shower. Two were cancer, but fortunately, the third one was benign. Despite this I still lead a busy and fulfilling life and it is now 14 years ago since I was first diagnosed.

Try to keep busy until you have your appointment, which I hope, will come through soon. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Here's hoping for good news!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you Jolamine, really appreciate the response. I know I’m probably worried about nothing I suppose I was just hoping from a bit more reassurance from my GP that it was nothing to worry about but didn’t really get that. I had a message this morning to say I should receive my appointment within the week and been within 2 but from what others have said I’m prepared for a longer wait. Thank you

  • Hi Lebell,

I shall be thinking of you tomorrow and hope that all turns out well.
