Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • I had a little bit of blood this morning and miraculously I had a doctors appointment at 11. She said it's probably nothing to worry about but something has triggered my proctitis and it's flared up.

I did however find out that they're checking what they sent off for analysis and it's possible I have crohns disease!! Nobody tells you anything. My gp said it might be another 4 weeks until I know. The main thing is I don't have the dreaded cancer but I thought it was all done and dusted!

I've said on here before that the nhs is wonderful but the communication is terrible.

Hope everyone is ok by the way.

  • I was told at the hospital that it doesn't matter if you don't drink all of it.

  • Usually they can tell crohns due to inflammation. but it may not have been inflamed during the procedure hence why its been sent off. They should have really explained the findings with you however.

  • Nothing was explained tbh.

They done the colonoscopy, diagnosed me with proctitis and that was it. Oh and gave me a prescription for the suppositories.

  • Hope everything goes well Amanda

  • Don’t forget the suppositories Steve !! lol. They usually do send off anything that they take off for biopsy, we was told about 4 weeks to get results back, . I’m surprised they didn’t tell you about the crohns if they had seen it but at least you know now and the doctor will treat it hopefully. My grandson has that he’s only 25 and not doing so well with it at the moment, always has to know where the toilet is, yours doesn’t sound too bad and hope it stays that way xxx

  • I might be having some more yet!

I just assumed everything was fine and that was the end of it as its been nearly 7 weeks now since the colonoscopy.

Yes that sounds similar to me,when I need to go I really need to go like instantly. Its a bit embarrassing at times but I won't go into details!

  • 25 is very young for that as well isn't it?

  • Home now. Well that didn't go as planned. Got all gowned up went to the room and the surgeon said I've just been reading your notes where is the pain. I showed him and he goes I dontbthink this procedure is the best thing to have at the moment. You will be best having a CT then he said another word after CT so like it's not a normal CT. He said this would scan my bowel  stomach, kidneys, liver and pancreas to see what it can find. I didn't know what to do and he said if he was seeing me now he would recommend that procedure not this one. I asked who he was and he said he was a bowel surgeon. So I've cone away not having it done. He has referred me urgently to have this CT something to be done xx

  • Oh no on the Blood bless you. How awful that no one told you that you would have thought that they would have said something to you when they talk to you after the procedure wouldn't you. Let's hope you find out soon. What have you got to do about the blood?
