Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • I’m really hoping it’s haemorrhoids I had a baby in September so potentially. I just didn’t expect the positive fit test. My dr is great thank god so I’m grateful to him for listening. Thank you

  • It really is I was referred on Tuesday last week and I’ve been relentlessly checking my app even though I get notifications like it’s going to magically appear. Spoke to the hospital as dr told me to chase it up Friday and they have a backlog so it’s a waiting game. Thank you Helen

  • Do you know the result of your fit test? I mean the reading?

Honestly it could be absolutely anything. The worst part for me was a work colleague had bowel cancer and my symptoms were the same! I was diagnosed with proctitis and I occasionally still get blood now. Its information of the colon. When I have a flare up it can bleed.

My work colleague made a full recovery. Not even any chemotherapy.

I know exactly where your head is right now but you need to try and stop worrying. Easy for me to say this now I guess as I was the worlds worst! Talking to people who've been through it helps that's why I started this to share my experience of it with other people who are worried/feel a bit lost.

  • Hi Steve, yes the result was 15 which I know isn’t high but still along with symptoms the doctor was worried and then I saw the referral for colerectal cancer it scared me. I’m glad to hear you had a good result and your colleague. I’m a massive overthinker and I’m a medical professional so my head goes to worst case scenario. Sometimes knowledge is the worst thing. Thank you for the reply.

  • No worries. I'm sure mine was 15 as well.

It's that C word though isn't it. Terrifying.

So you should know better then .

I hope everything works at ok for you.

  • I've made a full recovery too after being diagnosed with BC...surgery Jan last year and no other treatment needed..had my follow up colonoscopy today and all clear..

  • That's fantastic news. What a relief.

Are you in the bowel screening programme now then where you do a fit test every 2 years?

I'm in that now. I did a test 2 weeks ago and it was fine.

It's the polyps isn't it that are the problem? No polyps no cancer?

  • That’s great to hear Helen, I’m very pleased for you that you have made a full recovery.
you had just been diagnosed as I was going for my colonoscopy etc last year.

  • Hiya Steve, yes I think I'll be getting a testing kit this summer..Great news yours has come back OK.. mine was a polyp that turned bad..they didn't find any today so hoping none will grow again!!

  • Thank you Thistle..such a year it's been..altho a long time since we all been on this thread it's really good to see people commenting
