Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Your doing the right thing in getting checked out. Your fit test score like mine is on the low side so fingers crossed you've nothing to worry about.

If I go through anything like this again I genuinely will not be looking on Google. Its all bad news on there.

My 2nd lot of the solution was when I felt like gagging but you've got to push through and get it done.

    Best of luck.

  • How long after my first drink will I need the toilet as I’m meant to finish my work shift?

  • Hi SJ,

in my experience you might need to go to toilet during the first dose, by around halfway through my first one I could feel tummy starting to ‘gurgle’ and very soon after this I had to go to toilet and to be honest I sat there with the rest of my first dose, a bottle of water and my phone / book and stayed there for approx 2 hrs.

obviously I could have left the bathroom during this time however bowel movements were so frequent and with almost no warning that I thought it easier to just stay put! It is not like having diarrhoea, it’s literally like you are passing a huge volume of urine.

    Hope that helps!

  • Within the hour. There's no way I could of gone to work whilst taking those drinks as you'll need to go instantly to the toilet. Luckily I took mine on a Friday afternoon and id finished my night shifts for the week.

  • The 2nd dose is when it's at its worst imo. I just couldn't stop it coming out.

Hi hope you don’t mind me replying to your post - I know it was quite a few months ago now so hope all has worked out ok for you. I had a FiT test result of 129 which has really worried me. I have pains in my upper stomach (as well as on my left side) but did wonder if gastritis has caused my high FIT result. I did have mild gastritis years ago so wonder if it’s that. I’ll read further on to see what the outcome was for you. Hope you are well now six months on.

  •   it might be diverticular disease as that can cause stomach and left sided pain.

Have you been booked in for further investigations?    If you read through the posts you will notice many of us had positive FIT tests but on investigation other causes were found , not necessarily bowel cancer.

I would say try not to worry but I know from personal experience it’s almost impossible not to let your mind race ahead.   What I would say is stay away from Google.   You can make your symptoms fit any diagnosis if you look for it !   Try to deal with facts , not thoughts.   Hope all goes well.

Reb try not to worry to much but I know easier said than done and definitely definitely stay away from Google  As I said to someone else , you can make your symptoms fit any disease if you look hard enough !

Regarding the prep.  keep the solution in the fridge once you’ve made it up   Use a straw to drink through and you can add a bit of cordial as long as not red      Light white diet three days before  less in less out !    Above all be kind to yourself.   If you stay close to the toilet , have a hot water bottle and a cosy rug  Your phone and a book or magazine and try and just let it “ happen “   Be aware , it will be like someone has turned on a tap Also wet wipes and Vaseline will help mitigate any discomfort!    Let us know how you get on
