Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Aww that’s good, I’m glad you’ve got your husband there to look after you tomorrow.
I hope you get good news and come home relax and get a good nights sleep.
Please let us know how you got on when you feel up to it.

  • Yes def let us know..my husband was such a good support throughout all of it to me..altho so worrying for them watching you go through things.. fingers crossed all goes well tomorrow x

  • Thank you .iam very worried , as you say though it may be something other than cancer, hope you are ok,

  • I can't describe how relieved I am to be able to post another good news story to this thread. The colonoscopy was clear and the surgeon found a non-malignant cause for my symptoms. I was so convinced it was CRC by the time I went into hospital it has taken a while to register that it is not, that I am well, and that I scared the bejesus out of my husband for no reason.

My message to everyone who reads this thread thinking the worst (like I did last week) is - you are doing the right thing getting checked out, keep being sensible, but don't jump to conclusions. Once you have made the decision to get checked out, stay away from Dr Google and seek support and reassurance instead from your partner / family / friends etc. There is a high chance that everything will be ok.

Thanks again to everyone who replied to me at my lowest point. xx

  • That’s great news. Now breathe ……..   someone very wise messaged me when I was waiting to

have my colonoscopy and said , deal with facts not thoughts    I decided to stop googling and just conscentrate on getting to my procedure date and trusting the medical team

I’m sure you will be glad to relax now and put this behind you   Take care

  • Aww that’s great news, I’m so pleased for you that you got the all clear! It really is a whirlwind experience and it’s very easy to convince yourself of the worst outcome.
Hopefully your story will help to add more  reassurance to other people who find themselves on this forum fearing the worst and trying to deal with all the emotions that come with it!
Im glad you came back on to post your good news. Take care x

  • Hiya, am pleased to hear all is good with you and you're feeling much better..

I would like to add for anyone reading this though that finding out you have something malignant but discovered early  means I think generally a very good outcome...my polyp was malignant but caught before any movement anywhere..

I was so worried hearing my polyp was malignant which is what everyone  dreads but surgery was straightforward,  3 days in hospital and now 2 months on feeling fit and healthy and yes 6 monthly check ups but they caught very early thanks to screening and normal life expectancy and so on...

My worries and fear were huge but turns out all was sorted.. altho I would not minimise the worry and having to have major surgery...

    Take care x

  • Hi Steve

I'm a 50 year old lady. Had a positive fit test of 14 and am awaiting a colonoscopy and a camera down the throat (gastro).

Am terrified and like you wish I'd never looked on Google.

I have the solution ready for when I get called and am not looking forward to it.    I just hope I don't throw it back up!

Glad you had good news following yours - praying mines the same.

  • Hi Reb,

I know it’s easier said than done but try your best not to get caught up in Google, as honestly all it does is convince you of the worst possible scenario. If you find the time to read through this full thread you will see that it is the one thing people say over and over again - don’t read Google!

I hope that by reading others experiences you fill find hope, reassurance and comfort. For the vast majority of people who have posted there have been innocent explanations/ minor issues which have caused symptoms or positive FIT tests. And  as Helen pointed out earlier tonight, and by sharing her experience , even if there is something found it can be very successfully treated.

everyone on this thread has been where you are right now and felt similar emotions so can fully understand how you feel.

wishing you all the very best  x

  • That's fantastic news.

Its like having a new lease of life when you get the all clear! I can't explain it really.
