Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hi Becca

hope everything went well yesterday x

  • I am completely freaking out after having bloody diahoria and a positive fit test. Now waiting for the hospital to call me. My family has bowel cancer

  • Hi SJ78,

I know it’s very easy to say but try and not let yourself get too anxious or worried.
The good news is that you are doing something about your symptoms and hopefully you will find out what is going on. Try to remember that the vast majority of people with symptoms of bowel cancer actually end up being told symptoms are due to something else, bloody diarrhoea can be due to crohns or ulcerative colitis etc.

you are doing everything you can by seeking medical advice so try and keep it all in perspective for now.

wishing you all the best x

  • Hiya,  I agree with Thistle's reply below..do try not to worry..especially if a one off thing.. there are so many things it could be and given you've taken action really quickly then whatever it is will be early and am sure they'll be able to sort..

  • Hi all,

Everything went fine, I felt very calm once I arrived, the colonoscopy was uncomfortable in parts but nothing unbearable.

They said no obvious signs of cancer which is positive, they did take 8 biopsies (4 from 2 places) so I have to wait for those to come back. I also have a CT with contrast  of my abdomen and pelvis next Saturday.

From the Gastroscopy report is says I have erosive gastritis, which I am assuming is responsible for a lot of the pain, so hoping I can get that under control.

Thanks for all your comments and support x

  • Hiya, oh well done getting through it..biopsies I think take no more than a week to get results which is a worrying wait but not too long..is v good they say no obvious signs...I had CT scan too which didn't show anything...is quiet and I found it OK and think much better than having an MRI..just relax and enjoy eating normal food this weekend! X

  • Oh bless him!! He might phone up and ask for Piccolax which is what I had before my operation..does the exact same and so v v v much nicer than Plenvu..I won't have a follow up colonoscopy till later this year but am def going to ask for Piccolax

  • Thanks Helen, they said they would book me in for 3 weeks time to go over all the results.

Unfortunately I can't eat too much, finding stomach pain too much, I've ordered bone broth and going to try and have quite a bit of that over the next week as it's meant to be good. X

  • I have the hospital calling me today to tell me the next step. So anxious even though I’m sure it will be a colonoscopy

  • Do you know , I think the waiting is the worst bit.  Once you speak to the hospital and know exactly what’s happening it will feel less stressful.  Obviously there’s a certain amount of anxiety leading up to procedures and results but at least things are happening.   Try and concentrate on what you can control.  Deep breathing exercises are very helpful too.   Take care
