Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Thank you Eve...so hoping it will just sort it all out..I've a pre op appt on 11th so hoping they'll be reassuring over things...they do seem to think should be all I need and no further treatment but won't know till after it..

  • I'm really struggling tonight the eve before my colonoscopy. Mostly because I haven't had a symptom I've got them all! So I'm fairly certain I know it won't be great news and I'm dreading hearing those words

  • Hi Abigail, oh good you finding our chat good..so good you joined too..but what a wait for your results..must be so horribly hard..I know v well the agonising wait for news...is awfully hard and v feel for you.. positives are that you've had the colonoscopy and if anything immediately worrying I think they act v quickly.

See Sharkmarrison's post about her husband as they acted so quickly to get him into surgery to get all sorted quickly and make sure things caught in time..which I think they have done.. so I'd guess they feel not as urgent to get your results but still v worrying to find things out..sounds a v v long wait where you are though which is rubbish..do take care x

  • How you getting on Mark? Prep is v vile isn't it but is so the worst part and they do v tell you how much following the prep means tomorrow will work well...I heard rubbish news when I had mine but as they not exactly rushing me in for treatment does mean I know lots of what they find are v v slow growing and treatable.. let us know how you get on..

  • I so agree Eve..this was a lifeline to me when I had the FIT test result and since and will equally so support anyone else going through it...I so appreciated each and every message from everyone on this and still do as my journey still not concluded....and I still worry a lot about it all

  • Google so hard to keep off!!!!! But def did me no good at all...but is hard to resist when you're worrying I do know

  • Hiya Mark oh you are same as all of us and look how many of this in this chat not had bad news.. only a couple of us have and even tho mine not good they have told me lots of times it likely all contained in a polyp and surgery will sort..

But course you'll be feeling rubbish.. we all did the day before.. they will look after you tomorrow I promise and don't worry as whatever the news they will reassure you..honestly..

  • Thank you for your message. In my rational days, I totally think the same, it would have been pushed through urgently. But some times I just can’t think rationally!
im so sorry things haven’t been positive for you and I hope you get your treatment asap and al goes really well x

  • So today's the day ! Colonscopy and Gastoscopy at 11am. I've never been so scared of anything in my life and I've had my share of life trauma!

I just keep telling myself that my persiatant stomach discomfort, bloating, bowel changes, thin stools and the dark blood ( only once)  are all sure fire signs.  I've spent all night looking up treatment plans for state IV convincing myself that I would not be having these symptoms if it wasn't advanced.

I'm just so sad and everytime I hug my children I cry   .

  • I went through the same late 2022  with all the symptoms and there's no getting away from the fact its extremely worrying and there's very little we can do about it except to go and face whatever it reveals ,its better to know than not know some people don't get that chance ,anyway after all my worrying and fretting it turned out to be nothing serious and they told me this on the day of my Colonoscopy so I'm wishing the same for you Mark ,and they say its much more likely to be something else other than cancer causing your symptoms but even if its what we all fear its still better to know and start dealing with it ,I hope all is well ,always here for support .
