Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hi all, this has been such a lovely thread to read in terms of support and information, thank you.

I am 43, went to my doctor at beginning of Dec as had blood in stool and also possibly urine too. Have had urine test, blood tests, pelvic scan and a positive FIT test of 78 so was put on 2 week pathway. Now have a CT scan booked for Xmas Eve and a colonoscopy for the 4th Jan. Have been a bit shell shocked and up and down with it all but this thread has helped a lot.

  • Hi   welcome.  I’m a newcomer myself   Found this lovely supportive group when I was having investigations   I got great advice and one of the main things I took away from it was deal with Facts not thoughts   My thoughts were spiralling out of control and I had to try and focus myself on getting through the tests whilst trying to lead a normal life

it was good it was coming up to Christmas as it’s a busy time with plenty of distractions   My colonoscopy turned out to be straightforward and consultant felt my elevated FIT test and the blood was due to Diverticular Disease and couple internal haemorrhoids

I sincerely hope all goes well with your various tests  No point me saying don’t worry  think that’s too much to hope for but I do hope you get answers soon that will put your mind at ease.  Take care

  • Hi Eve, that really is so helpful thank you. I think Facts not Thoughts will be my new mantra. You’re so right in a funny way the hecticness of Christmas is a good distraction and certainly makes the days go faster. It’s just sleeping that’s the tricky part.

  • Hiya

Sounds like you not too long to wait for tests which is really good...not sure what prep you got but the advice re how to take is good...v best of luck and let us know how you get on..agree with Eve and so hard to focus on anything other than worry rather than facts but do try not to worry too much..take care Helen

  • And I do agree re sleep...mine is rubbish!! Altho I have Amitriptyline for migraines and it really does help with sleep..to some degree..I hope will be ok once I have surgery and hope yours will be better once you get tests and sorted

  • Stay off Google for your own sanity!!!
