Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • It's a massive relief isn't it. I actually got upset whilst walking out of the hospital. I can live with the proctitis i was diagnosed with.

  • Wonderful news. So happy for you

  • I am having mine on Tuesday morning but I am having both preps on Monday. One at 2 and 1 at 5. It made me nervous but I’ve got several people to check and it really does seem to be that.

  • Yes I’ve heard that , if it’s an AM slot you take both together.  Not sure which is better option. Mines at 6:30 pm so going to be a very long day tomorrow.  However my consultant “ squeezed “ me on to the end of his list so I’d be in and out before Christmas but now it’s arrived  im beginning to wish I’d waited until January   Oh we’ll just have to deal with whatever it is .  We will both be prepping tomorrow!    As I was making up the solution I was thinking , bound to be hundreds of people doing this very thing !!

  • It's strange how each hospital seems to give different instructions. My appointment was 8.30am on Sat and I was supposed to do 5pm, 6pm and 8pm Friday and then 5.30am. I moved it all an hour earlier apart from the 5.30am which I did at 5.15am.

  • I’ll be thinking of you!!

  • It’s good to know you have a little room

for timings.  It says to have a rest before taking the second lot. That made me laugh!

  • Hi all, hope it is okay to but in. I'm really panicking about my results and symptoms. I'm 31 and had strange bowel habits for years. But I saw an awful lot of bright red blood about 2 months ago, I went to the GP and done a Fit which was positive (not huge amounts but it was 45) then a calprotectin test for inflammation which was also positive (280+) I've been referred for an urgent colonoscopy about 2 weeks ago but heard nothing yet. But past 3 days I've noticed tiny black specks in my bowel movement and on the paper when I've wiped. I've had intermittent tummy discomfort which seems to travel around, mainly my right side but the other night I had severe lower left sided pain. It had me crying my eyes out.

Doctor isn't concerned about cancer, but I'm going mad thinking about it all. And yes I resorted to look at Dr Google. I'm just so worried.

  • I agree.. second lot affected me much more than the evening before..both times I was able to go to bed by 10.30 and sleep all night but effects seemed to really kick in with the 2nd dose..

  • Yes is good news Lpear
