Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • It's not ideal but the hospital did say that when it's inflamed it can lead to bleeding. If it was to get to often then I guess id have to have the suppositories again. It's something I'm just going to have to try and manage the best I can. Alcohol seems to be the issue. I might just knock it on the head completely.

  •   interestingly Steve since I stopped at beginning of month from drinking ,,previously always trued to stick to 10 units or less a week , my symptoms ( rectal bleeding) have totally cleared up.   Hav e my colonoscopy this Monday so fingers x for no issues.

  • It's possible you could have the same as me? It doesn't happen every time I have a drink. If I go a bit ott and if I have diarrhoea the next day that can bring it on. Its definitely alcohol related with me. It must really antagonise me down there.

  • I’m exactly the same.  I do have IBS ( d) have had it all my adult life so the frequent bowel movements don’t help either though interestingly they’ve also calmed down.   I’m also participating in a trial of Symprove. Now in week 10 so that also might be having a calming effect   WHO knows ??   However I couldn’t ignore the symptoms  and the positive FIT test when they appeared though I’ve thought today I really should have waited as obviously I’ve been normal this past month  anyhow will see on Monday and hopefully get though the prep ok !

  • Best of luck with that lol.

I've never heard off symprove. What is it?

Your fit test score could mean a multitude of things and as you probably seen at the start of this thread I was convinced I was getting bad news.

Different things affect people in different ways I guess, mine is obviously alcohol irritating it.

  • Symprove is a probiotic that you take daily before good. Helps restore all the good bacteria .  I’ve been on it ten weeks. Just starting to see results

  • That sounds like something I could benefit from.

  •

if you Google Symprove. It will explain better than me. I was lucky to be accepted on a trial run by gut uk. But I intend continuing with it.

  • Hi everyone. I've read this thread from the start over the last few days! Hello to everyone and I'm so sorry to those who've had a diagnosis.

I'm a 39 year old female. I recently had a few occasions of blood after a stool although nothing in weeks. No other symptoms. Due to family history of bowel cancer I contacted the GP who arranged a FIT test, it came back at 28. So I'm booked in for a colonoscopy on Saturday morning. I've got my Klean Prep ready to start on Friday evening. Not looking forward to that part and trying to keep it from my young kids who are probably going to be wondering why mummy is constantly on the toilet! I'm going to tell them that I've got a little check up at the hospital but leave it at that for now.

  •   welcome. I’m new too. Also had positive test. Have Colonoscopy on Monday.  Good luck for Saturday.
