Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hi everyone

Just joining this thread as have been reading through.

30yo and had a FIT score of 160. I have no other symptoms at all, no visible bleeding. Only had the FIT done due to low ferretin and low B12. I have my colonoscopy next week but I'm already imagining the worst and feel sick with worry.

  • Hiya..oh bless you such a worry but am sure you'll be totally fine..do follow all the advice re the prep for colonoscopy and if you can have someone take you as with sedation is painless and really nowhere near anything like I was worried about and was not embarrassing either x

  • I suppose they take so much bowel to make sure they have it all but I know what you mean I would be worried too. But try not to worry they know what they are doing. How have your appointments gone this week?

Thanks my GP keeps emailing hospital but hospital is ignoring my GP too. Its awful xx

  • That's fantastic news Sam I'm so pleased. OK sounds like you still have a long road ahead of you but thankfully it's not what you thought it could have been such a relief for you

  • That's fantastic news Sue I'm so pleased for you. Such a relief for you both xx

  • Hi ah bless you. Like Helen said just follow the advice with the prep and you will be fine. Can't give you anymore advice than that as mine didn't take place. But good luck  you will be fine x

  • Hi All,

Just wanted to come on a give an update on my partner. He had his pre-op on Tuesday. It went really well and he is in the best possible shape to have surgery. They are confident his recovery will go well too!! Another massive relief.

The hospital called yesterday and his surgery is booked in for Monday. A lot sooner than we imagined but we are so grateful they are dealing with this quickly! He will be having the left side of his colon removed but they are confident that they won’t need to fit a stoma (all being well)

Still a long road ahead but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel now.

Hope you are all doing ok! Xx

  • That’s good news that you’re not waiting around for long, get it over and done with. I’ll be thinking of you both on Monday and hoping it all goes smoothly and no stoma needed. Let us all know how it goes xx

  • Hiya...that all sounds very good with his pre op checks and I think they are cautious with optimism so saying they're confident all will go well with recovery is another real plus..

Good to have early surgery date...less time to worry about it all too..the operation sounds like what they were planning for me and they described it as gold standard I.e. they say best amount to take out and joining things up is quite straightforward..do please let us know how it all goes and will be thinking of you xx

  • Hiya.. all the appointments went well and all my blood tests and other tests show all good..so suppose partly this why they going to try colonoscopy first..I just hope I find out soon when that will be..I cant help hoping this will work OK but know still very likely they'll go with surgery after..just wish the horrible thing was gone and out of me...

That's so rubbish what's going on with your appointments.. and so stressful waiting and waiting to hear.. whereabouts in country are you? Do they have long waiting lists? Do so feel for you...my life been one long round of waiting over last 2 months xx
