Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Yeah u totally right...I know they say all the worst case stuff but just is freaky when they tell you it all..then I've read all the paperwork which sets it all out even more so!! Still finding it worrying they say only an early cancer then they'll take out a radical amount of bowel.

I left Voicemail earlier and will also ask at appointment tomorrow...such a lot to cope with.

Hope u hear something soon lovely xx

  • Hi Helen hi everyone, hope you are all doing well, sorry to hear your news Helen but glad you are having surgery next week and hopefully that's all that is needed. I just wanted to let you all know I have had the results back from my breast biopsy and it's come back clear it's just the non cancerous lump called fibroadenoma which is a relief, all thats left to do is to find out what's caused the blood clots (as I haven't got cancer) I might have a blood clotting disorder which if I have then my 3 children need to be tested but if they can not find anything wrong that's caused them I will be definitely be on blood thinners for the rest of my life, I'm doing OK have had chest infections recently been up a&e due to chest pains/tightness and breathlessness, got a long road to recovery the docs said.

  • I'm glad you've had your appointment and know when your surgery is; sometimes the waiting is the worst. No doubt you've got loads of questions, so make sure you jot them all down on your phone or paper as they occur and grill your surgeon until you have all the info you feel you need. 15-30cm probably sounds a lot less scary as a percentage or framed differently; I think 6" sounds less than 15cm even though it's the same! Hope you've got some things to do or hobbies to distract - it's so easy to get so focussed you don't get the time to mentally unwind. Good luck for next week, I'm sure all will go smoothly and in no time you can start to look forward and relax.

  • Sorry I didn’t get on here yesterday, such a busy time with appointments, up to now things are no worse than before so kinda good news.

It won’t be long now Helen and by Christmas you should defo be on the road to recovery. I’m keeping everything crossed it’s early cancer and very treatable with nothing else needed.

Sam that sounds great news about the breast, it’s one thing less to worry about. I hope you manage ok with the blood thinners if you need to be on them for life but that may not happen.

Good news also about your husband Fantastic Mango, so happy for you both.

Take care everyone and sending hugs xx

  • Hiya Sam, that's so good news your results are all clear..what a relief for you! Sounds like a bit of a road to recovery but at least you know nothing as bad as it could be...altho you've had a totally worrying roller coaster of a time I think...

My own roller coaster continuing as Surgeon rang this morning and they've now decided they are going to try to remove my malignancy by colonoscopy first then see if surgery needed next....so more waiting to find out when that will be..he warned even if they can remove then testing would confirm if they need to remove the large section...so yet more waiting and worrying!! Xx

  • Hiya..I've replied to Sam above so more waiting.youre so right re the writing down questions as so easy I'm finding to forget when I'm at an appointment or on the phone..I've been doing lots of walking and also some adult colouring books which are pretty relaxing I'm finding.. what a journey this is turning out to be...

  • Hiya

How have the appointments been this week? Do you have confirmed dates and so on? Xx

  • How are things Sue and how's Mart doing? I've replied above and all still in limbo waiting...cant help hoping they can remove via colonoscopy but also worried this will not work and will then have to wait again for a surgery date... xx

  • It seems as though it’s never ending doesn’t it but I’m sure their doing what’s best for you Helen, it’s just the waiting that gets to you thinking you’re walking around with cancer, I know how you feel believe me. It’ll all turn out good in the end just have faith.

Mart just had a phone call tonight about his polyps, still not had a letter about biopsy on them but doctor said 5 were fine but one called Tubulovillous could turn cancerous so may need another colonoscopy in 3 years, we can live with that.
I did write above yesterday to you Helen.
Sending hugs to you all xx

  • Hiya Sue, sounds positive they know what they found with the 1 and will keep him in good surveillance..they said same to me that I'll need regular 3 yearly colonoscopy appt so I think does confirm they are slow growing.. but so good news the other 5 were totally fine..such a relief I think..

Is yes the walking around all the time knowing it is in there and just wanting it removed...ahh hope you right and they'll just get it out and I can feel normal again...never really thought about it too much before but just want the feeling of being OK and normal...hugs to you and Mart too xx
