Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery. 

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes,then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal. 

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

    Hi just read your post it is very worrying I know ,but like you say there are positives ,the fact it didn't go unnoticed for any longer and that they can possibly operate that is very positive , this is a great place to chat and get good advice also there are great nurses on here Monday to Friday who can answer some queries and point you in the right direction ,I sincerely hope things turn out well for your family Best Wishes x

    Sounds like he not really had any of the worrying symptoms such as weightless and tiredness so hopefully has been picked up early...I had the CT scan for the same reason ie to see if anything spread anywhere..

    Is good you only got a few days before you can find out more and like me when they say they'll operate it makes you think well that is a real positive..

    If your youngest is 6 sounds like you're both quite young and so more likely to be fit and to recover well from treatment..is really good that he did go to GP and that the GP proactive to get further tests..

    Do update after Wednesday..and def do not Google!!! I stupidly did which send me into spirals of worrying...I stick firmly to NHS only now x

    Thanks Helen, yes I think it went ok, uncomfortable I’d say rather than painful, now it’s like I have a chunk of glass in my eye and struggling to read or write as have to keep the patch on until tomorrow’. Sure it’ll be a bit better in the morning (fingers crossed)

    He’s had symptoms for a while but he put it down to other things as he’s generally healthy so we are taking it as a positive that we’ve caught it at the right time! His mum had bowel cancer and she’s now in her 70’s so again another positive to look on. 

    He’s 50 and lives a very active lifestyle. 

    We really weren’t expecting the news last week which is why it’s floored us. We thought his symptoms were a mixture of piles and IBS. 

    Thankfully he still has a good appetite and when they told us the results of the colonoscopy they said the tumour was easily passable.

    Thanks again - I’m thinking more positive now after chatting and I will let you know how we get on next week.

    Yes sounds like quite a bit to be positive about..since my diagnosis I've found out so many people been through the same things and like your mother in law 20 years on they are doing fine..

    I think medical staff so cautiois about giving positive news that that they have done so I think is something to focus on..guess see what they say this coming week and hopefully you'll find out next steps..

    I'm hoping I hear soon re my pre op appointments incld the short colonoscopy and when they all will be...take care xx

    Quick update. 
    I had the colonoscopy today and they found nothing, no cancer and no polyps at all which was a great relief. 
    Found the Moviprep easier to take than expected too.
