Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hiya...oh bless you..hope you feeling OK today..I see about the colonography which sounds much less invasive and easier to have done which is a positive.. do you know when that will be?

I have been signed off work till 23rd Nov which is good.. I had a call at 5pm today from hospital to say they discussed my results today and CT scan shows nothing spread anywhere and looks all contained in polyp..they have sent results to Consultant to decide if can come out via colonoscopy or would need surgery and they've provisionally booked it for 21st Nov...such a massive relief.. altho obvs it is still malignant and I dread an operation but one lot of worrying is at least ceased xx

  • I think the chats are so helpful aren't they as people with same things and same worries which friends and family just don't have..so I've found this chat so v helpful and supportive.. really good news about your hubby's x-ray...yes cataract surgery they told me totally painless xx

  • Hi I’m new here

    Found this thread so helpful

Just had my routine poo test followed by a referral for colonoscopy.
I’m so worried. (Previous 2 were fine, I’m slim, active, eat very little ultra processed food, lots of veg, fish, fruit virtually no red meat so I didn’t think I was high risk)

I didn’t have any symptoms before I got the results and now I think I have them all.
I don’t want to eat anything, if I do eat I get pain and diarrhoea from stress.
I m always a worst case scenario person, I’ve been going through all the probabilities from online data, I know I shouldn’t.
My screening appointment is next Wednesday so I don’t know how long I have to worry for yet.

People who had colonoscopy had always said how awful they were so that was another stress too but I’m finding your comments reassuring

I don’t want to tell friends and family until I know what’s going on, so it’s good to be anonymous on here.

  • Hiya Lily...you same as me..no symptoms at all..and I exercise every day and eat well too..I cook from scratch every day and don't eat processed food etc..screening appt is where they cover all that sort of thing to check you fit and healthy and ok for a colonoscopy which sounds like you are.. was 2 weeks from that till colonoscopy so not too long to wait...please do read the posts re advice for it...but is so not a bad procedure...def have sedation..not at all painful and not embarrassing either x

  • Thanks for responding.

  • The colonoscopy is quite straightforward really,it's honestly nothing to worry about. I hardly felt anything during my procedure but I was sedated. They give you the option of that or gas and air. As you've probably read on here the worst bit is the drinking the prep and what comes after!

It can also be a multitude of things for your fit test to be high etc. You've got to be extremely unlucky to get the worst case scenario.

  • Oh no not more prep lol. He wants me to have this one done so they can scan my bowel, stomach, liver, pancreas and kidneys at the sane time because when I said where the pain was he didn't think we would find anything in the bowel. I'm worried it's my liver now as I'm getting pain on my right side xx

  • No the surgeon who I saw said he was referring me urgently so hopefully I will get an appointment soon.

That is fantastic news that it hasn't spread anywhere else I am so pleased. Such a huge relief for you. Let's just hope the Consultant comes back to you soon telling you which way they are going to take it out. Just think in 4 weeks it will all be over and it will be out of you. Not long now for you xx

  • Hi Lily try not to worry it could be anything. It's hard for me to comment as I didn't have it done in the end. So the others are best to help you but they have said its not painful x

  • Hope you get an appt very soon..I think when they booked my CT scan it was about 10 days so tho a different procedure hopefully you'll hear soon..I have had a call today and as they describe me as young! (I'm over 50!) they said they will do surgery as I am fit and otherwise healthy.. they'll take lymph nodes out as well..they did say it does not mean anything more than polyp but it had such a wide base they think best to be safer.. is a real worry as is major surgery altho via keyhole..think will be in about 3 weeks time...will have another colonoscopy to put markers in but won't be a full one...means no sedation...oh what a roller coaster it all is!!! Xx
