Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • We’re doing ok thanks Amanda, Mart had a chest X ray last week, just routine for his kidney cancer, he has a meeting with his stomach surgeon 13 Nov (same as your meeting) and I have my last cystoscopy ( hopefully last if nothing showed up) 6 Nov, so it’s the usual waiting we all seem to have. He hasn’t got the results from his bowel biopsies yet, waiting again. My cataract surgery on Saturday. Holiday in Dec so something to look forward to.  I’m pleased to hear you don’t sound quite so worried now, it’s a shock at the time then things start to fall into place, Good luck Helen fingers crossed it all goes well xx

  • Hi everyone. Hope your all doing ok. I reckon this thread will still be active around Christmas the way things are taking time etc.

  • Hi Sue, yes the shock was awful and the worrying before and after..I'm still worrying but it does feel a bit like the lull before the storm as I don't find anything out for nearly 3 weeks.. sounds like Martin being well observed and managed and you too..results tho seem to take so long....good your eye surgery in a few days..coincidentally I met 2 nurse friends yesterday who work in theatres doing cataract surgery all day every day..they said about how routine and straightforward it is xx

  • Think you're right..all the endless days and weeks of waiting!!

  • I’m on another cancer research uk chat for the Osophagus cancer, that’s been going 3 years, people find it and join in and ask for help. I should really come off it though, at first we didn’t know if it was Marts Osophagus or stomach and been as there isn’t a stomach forum I joined the Osophagus one. I’ve just seen on his NHS records that the X Ray was ok so one thing less to worry about. Thank for the info Helen on the cataract, I’m still scared but people say you don’t really feel anything so just hoping that’s the case. Yes waiting is the worst thing ever, you just want to get on with whatever’s going to happen, I know how you feel Helen, hope you find out soon xx

  • Hi sorry not been around had a rough few days. Not been feeling well at all. How are you doing xx

  • Wow good job that other doctor told him to dobit then isn't it. Don't worry you haven't frightened me I will keep on top of it and make sure something is done and they don't forget me. Thanks for that. After doing some research it coukd be a test called a CT Colongraphy but I'm not sure. How are things your end xx

  • Yes I am having contrast but it might be a CT Colonography

  • That is sounding positive. Fingers crossed for you when you get your results. Just a long wait for you now bless you xx

  • I’ve just googled that Amanda, that’s the same as Mart had at first, we called it a virtual CT but according to google it’s the same as you said. It’s not a problem having it as they only go in the bowel a little bit, put air in and take pics. The prep he had wasn’t so bad either, it was called Gastrografin and not much of it. I’ve just looked back on his notes and yes it’s the same thing. They can’t do anything if they find something though so it would be back to colonoscopy, let’s hope they don’t find anything. Good luck xx
