Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hi hope you don't mind me jumping on your post. I've just seen your post Steve. I'm 50 and I've been having abdominal pains now for 8 weeks. I've also had weight loss, tiredness and my bowel habits have changed. I've just had a FIT test and that has come back abnormal. So I've been told I need a colonoscopy for suspected cancer. I've read this post and it has given me some relief but I am worried as you can imagine.

  • I know exactly how you feel as does everyone else on here. You just need to remember that there's multiple things it could be. Using Google can be worse as well as it makes you more paranoid! I was the world's worst for it and it drove me round the twist.

9 out 10 people get the all clear so that's something you need to remember as well.

  • Hiya..I sort of squinted at the machine then looked away..bit like a polo..what was weird as once I laid done it was towards my feet and then just shut my eyes and was the bed that felt moving up an down and it was quiet..I was visualising inside my head but I think the drugs were making it all feel a bit surreal..I even think I slept..weird..I didn't have to remove my clothes and my arms were   around my head so never have any sensation of claustrophobia at all...oh I think 2 weeks to hearsadly

  • Hi Sue

Oh that was the scan that took so long? Blimey I hope mine does not take that long!!! Am hoping I'll hear week after next adter their weekly MDT which takes place Wednesdays..I am going  to ring the nurse to.orrow or Tuesday to see if she can let me know anything.things are moving I agree but worry won't lessen till I know ct results to know what polyp has been doing and my ultimate utter dread it has morphed to stage 4 and spread and only palliative...altho I may be catastophising.....xx

  • Oh but best new Martin's results you going off on lovely hols!!!! You so need it xxx

  • Yes looked like a polo..all seemed sort of laid  back in pieces ans didn't look when it was scanning as eyes totally tight shut!! Pills were for scan.will not hear till end of next week so think 27th approx....ages!!!!xx

  • It was the doctors we couldn’t get an appointment with, the CT results was back a lot sooner than that, I e mailed his CNS stomach nurse she had a quick look and just told me what she thought plus radiology hadn’t mentioned cancer anywhere else, so your nurse should be able to have a luck for you. Yes Helen you’re getting in front of your self, I’m sure they’ll take the polyp off and maybe a bit of the bowel where it’s joined if needed and that will be that. Got everything crossed for you. Xx

  • Ah that's good as I have the name and phone number of the CR nurse specialist so will give her a call next week..mind racing away and need to try and keep one stage at a time...xxx

  • Bless you. You did really well sounds like a CT if it was quiet. I have had both a CT and MRI and MRai are noisy like you have a woodpecker and a drill in with you!!!! I always do the same as you close my eyes I couldn't do it with my eyes open. You did well as they aren't nice. Fingers crossed that 2 weeks goes quiet quickly for you x

  • Ah Helen try not to think that far ahead yet. I know it's probably easy for me to say but please try to stay positive xx

  • How lovely a holiday to Tenerife you both really need this holiday. Lovely weather too. How long are you going for x

  • Thank you...I'm glad I got it over and done with!I do hope the weeks go quickly as waiting is awfully hard xx
