Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • I just have always feared this result.. am a worrier by nature and this just has sent me totally off the wall..is like a nightmare as thinking the worst..I agree re Steve's post and I know several people who have had similar and made a complete recovery..I just think its one bad news adter another..thank u and all for your support..is so kind of you x

  • Hiya. GP signed me off for a couple of weeks and is giving me 3 diazepam to get through CT scan..is stupid but all the odds pointed to things not being bad so is horribly shocking to find this out...am not good at worry I do know and just been thinking the worst...I feel so healthy tbo..I exercise every day and eat well and altho I did smoke I gave up over a decade ago...dear me.. this is a nightmare really z

  • I'm so sorry for you Helen. Do you have support at home? So what happens now then I take it they will remove it or have you got to go and see them x

  • Helen I’m just the same, I worry no end worry way before it’s time to worry, I read everything I can find that doesn’t help! Doctor phoned today with his CT scan results from the 26th Aug  ( yes that’s how long we’ve had to wait) he now has a cyst on his spleen 3cm, apparently it’s grown since last time, we never knew he had that, we wasn’t told. Docs writing to Haematology so more waiting and worrying. Again take care xxx

  • Hi..yes I have my lovely partner David who is being super supportive...they will remove it but just don't know how yet..they will let me know..they will give me an appointment to discuss what they'll do I think x

  • Oh bless you..more worrying for you too..that such an awful ongoing worry and so long to hear news..how awful it is this time for you as well as me xx

  • Ah I'm so pleased you have someone who is being supportive to you. That will help massively. Hope you don't have to wait too long to have it removed x

  • Ah bless you how awful more worrying for you. I have a cyst on my brain. I wasn't told about that either until recently mine is nearly 2cm. They are leaving mine but keeping an eye on it. But mine isn't growing. Hope you get some answers about your husbands x

  • I hope not..they did indicate to my partner when he rang today that surgery might not be for 8 weeks...am going to look at private healthcare tomorrow to see if maybe can be done sooner..x

  • Hi Helen, I’m new to this forum and just wanted to say how sorry I am to hear your news. 8 weeks is such a long time - my optimistic mind assumes maybe they’re not as worried about it growing/spreading if they can wait longer to remove it, but my more realistic mind says it doesn’t make a difference when cancer is involved - you’d want it out of you as soon as possible. I really hope you don’t have to wait that long x
