Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Just read through your update, I’m sorry you’ve not had good news, I agree with you in it doesn’t sound good but I definitely think you should call your doctor and ask them to explain things abit more simple for you so you can either stop worrying or you can atleast know your options if it does turn out to be cancerous.I hope you have a lot of support at home at this moment in time I think they have a number on this website you can actually speak to a nurse about your concerns.Good luck and try to stay positive.xx

  • Helen have you thought about phoning Macmillan up and talking to them, I’ve done that on a few occasions. 0808 808 0000. My husband has 4 polyps, found out  2 left and  2 right side, not sure where the flat one is. I think I may phone Macmillan up later today, It’s so scary and not much info is been offered, just waiting for a nurse to phone up……Keep in touch Helen xx

  • Aww bless well I have everything crossed for u xxx

  • I said this before that we have a wonderful NHS service but it's things like this that need improving imo. Leaving people in limbo isn't good.

  • That's a good idea Sue I hadn't thought of doin that.. I hope you get a call from the nurse..given they told me straight away their concerns then id hope they would have let you know already there was a worry with ant of his..do let me know what macmillan say xx

  • Yes it is the waiting and worrying that is hard..they said 5 to 7 days before biopsy result..they will phone me with that and I had blood taken..not sure why or what they'd test from that

  • I phoned Macmillan but they wasn’t a lot of help, maybe because I had no questions really just worried and wanting to know why the long wait. The way I’m thinking now is at the moment we have nothing to worry about until we get a phone call so gonna try and live with that but in my heart of hearts I know bad news is coming. Hope you hear soon Helen.

Sam how are you doing? Take care all xx

  • Aww bless you sue, fingers crossed for some good news, I'm doing OK, started treatment now for blood clots on lungs I'm on them til February that's when I have appointment to speak to the specialist doctor, and I have got breast clinic on the 23rd this month, think they want to find out if I have cancer first if I don't then they will investigate on what's caused the blood clots xxx

  • Oh bless you Sue..I think that's the thing isn't it..just tons of worries..the nurse from yesterday was ringing me today to see if I had any questions..I missed her call but I don't really have any as until you know things then everything else is just worry isn't it..like you all I feel is bad news coming but my other half keeps saying that I don't know that but I feel it..so hope you get some good news..xx

  • Ah Sam glad you doing OK and fingers crossed they find nothing on the 23rd..I prob should remember but I think your colonoscopy was OK? How you feeling in yourself now? Xxx
