Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery. 

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes,then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal. 

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

    I was told the waiting time at the moment is 4 weeks but I’m fairly confident as the doctor seemed happy he doesn’t think it is, just glad it’s done and over with! X

    Yes definitely he said they go of the size usually if it’s cancer it’s quite large and mine was very small! They where all so lovely and we was chatting and even laughing through the procedure, I was also worried my whole bottom half would be on show but they have the very “fancy” shorts so that made me feel so much more relaxed too!Thank you xx

    Hi Bear..think that's better news than you thought so is good news..your comments on the procedure are worrying though..I will be sedated but that I think does not change how it feels at the time...I am scared stiff it will really hurt.. I have a very low pain threshold...when I was in labour I needed pain relief after only a few minutes.. is scary..

    Definitely! Try not to worry to much it goes by very quick originally when I was meant to have the sedative I was told its not painful atal just feels wierd. However as I didn’t I felt everything I had a very narrow colon (doctors words) so it was a tad more uncomfortable it doesn’t hurt going in it’s only when they turn the “corners” I felt it up by my ribs and that was uncomfortable, the air caused no discomfort atal even afterwards! You can have gas and air to which is a good distraction more then pain relief. I’ve had 3babies one only weeks ago and it’s absolutely nothing compared to labor. You will be ok! X

    Ah thanks Bear for your reply really do appreciate it..I think gas and air will be good..v good to hear not like labour!!! Good it goes quickly too..am not normally an anxious person but this whole thing from process to result is freaking me out..2 weeks today till mine x

    It’s definitely the waiting and over thinking that is the problem! Luckily for me mine was extremely fast and I was in within a week of being reffered I was told literally days prior and was totally un prepared for the diet changes and the solution. So I think that helped as I didn’t have a lot of time to think. They give you a gown and some disposable shorts with a whole in the back and there’s nurses in there also talking to you and distracting you you can tell them to stop at any time if it’s to much. I couldn’t  sedate sue to breastfeeding but was told if it’s unbearable they would stop anytime to sedate but I didn’t need too!

    I had 4 and I was told at the time they weren't cancerous. I think they send them off to be checked regardless. 

    Good news it's nothing sinister though.

    Mine was over in around 20 minutes. I couldn't really feel anything, only on the odd occasion. I had a nurse there as well to reasurre me and make sure I was ok.
