Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hi Sam, they told me this morning that they tell you on the day..the nurse said they sit you down in the recovery room and they go through things with you and give you it written out and same is sent to your GP

  • Hiya..it is such a nice supportive thread..I think someone has mentioned that high FIT tests don't always indicate something serious..I guess too you're getting checked out really quickly after noticing something which is really good to have done..all of us who are waiting for the appt are feeling same as you..is so hard not to worry and think the worst..I've been like this since getting the letter a week ago..

  • I got sedated for the colonoscopy. I hardly felt a thing. At least the wheels are now turning so to speak. There's nothing more you can do now except to wait and see what happens.

  • They tell you straight after.

  • Hi Helen,  I got told they tell you if they remove anything or take biopsy and results from those takes 2-3 weeks, that's the bit I'm dreading is the waiting for the results x

  • I imagine you've Had a reply to this but it could be literally anything. I was convinced I had it abd Google didn't help either. It was extremely hard trying to stay focused in front of my wife and kids. I felt like I couldn't show them how worried I was. It's probably an old fashioned attitude but I just didn't want them to see how worried I was.

  • Hi lulupsy, my Fit test result came back at 400 too, I'm 38 also had other symptoms of nearly 5 weeks of bleeding (tissue) even when I didn't open bowel, lower stomach cramps, tiredness all the time no energy, loss of appetite I had my phone assessment yesterday got to have Colonoscopy and CT scan, Colonoscopy is booked for the 1st October, hope you hear from them very soon x

  • Do they say whether it's cancer or not?

    Thanks x

  • I can't speak for everyone but yes mine did. If they find anything during the procedure they tell you and they show you on the screen, that's if you want to look of course.

He cut 4 polyps away and he said straight away they were non cancerous. I think they can turn cancerous if left there. They send them off just to be 100% sure I guess.

  • Hi when I had my colonoscopy as soon as it ended she told me there wasn't anything worrying to be seen ,after being taken to a ward for a cup of tea a nurse came in with my notes and told me I was being transferred back to GP it was written in the notes what they found but it was nothing worrying ,the relief was immediate .
