Permanent pain after colonoscopy without sedation

February 2022 I had a colonoscopy without sedation, was my first colonoscopy and before it I had a chat with the nurse regarding the difference between sedation procedure and non sedation, she told that without sedation I could go home earlier.

My son was outside waiting for me and I didn’t want him to wait long period so I decided to have a non sedation colonoscopy. During the procedure I was very nervous and when the doctor start insufflating my colon I hold the wind , causing a pain and a sensation of fainting.

I told the doctor and she asked me to pass the wind but was to late, the damage was done, she stopped the procedure and I was sent home with a pain in my groin area. I had another colonoscopy in November 2022 with sedation and they managed to remove a polyp 2 cm long, finishing with a constant bleeding I had.

Here we are in September 2023 and the pain still here, had lots of exams, physiotherapist work on it and they can’t find what is the problem. If anyone experienced the same thing and could help me  will be a life change.

I advise people never do it without sedation and wish all the best .

  • Hello Claudio,

Thank you for taking the trouble to come on the forum and share your colonoscopy experience and give advice on sedation based on what happened to you. I am so sorry you ended up with permanent pain after this colonoscopy without sedation. It's a shame that they haven't been able to identify what the problem is and I hope that the physiotherapy is helping you.

Hopefully you will hear from other forum members who have experienced the same thing - it does help to talk to others who've been through this before. I hope that with time, this pain will eventually subside and disappear.

    Best wishes,
