Abnormal bit but expected result

Hi there, I have Crohn’s and have diarrhoea everyday. I recently submitted a stool sample, and the reception called me to say the result was ‘abnormal but expected’, and I have to repeat the process in 6 weeks. The result on my NHS app says it contained ‘a large amount of organic material and was difficult to homogenise’ - what does that mean? Are they testing for bowel cancer? I’ve done my home research and is it true people with Crohn’s are more at risk of developing cancer? Any advice much appreciated, thanks

  • Hi Worried_about and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about your symptoms and for the worry the information included with your results is causing.

Unfortunately I can't answer your questions in relation to this but our very friendly and informative team of cancer nurses may be able to help so if you'd like to get their thoughts on this, do give them a call on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they'll do all they can to help and hopefully put your mind at ease.

I'm sure some of our members will be along soon to offer their thoughts and support to you as well but in the meantime, we'll have our fingers crossed all goes well with your next test in 6 weeks time.

    Kind regards,
