Hi all, I’m 26 years old and I have had a very itchy, sore and tender nipple/areola and sometimes spreading around on my left breast for almost 2 years. It is very similar to eczema, but not quite the same. I do suffer with eczema as I have done all my life, however when I have eczema flare ups it is always symmetrical and my right breast is completely unaffected. I have been backwards and forward to the GP numerous times and been given different steroid creams and moisturisers which have taken down (not completely) the Eczema like rash around my breast but not on my nipple, my nipple is flaky, itchy and 3 weeks ago I noticed that my breast had started swelling and was tender to touch. I also noticed my nipple had changed direction ever so slightly to be pointing upwards and slightly to the left. I expressed my concerns to my GP and she referred me to the breast clinic.
my breast clinic appointment was the Friday just gone and I left feeling very unimpressed and not listened to. I had a physical examination and was told that it was eczema and to use moisturiser. She couldn’t feel any lumps and I was told that breast cancer is always a lump and it was my eczema pulling my nipple in a different direction and for it to be cancer i had to have a lump or an inverted nipple. I wasn’t offered any other form of investigations I was just discharged with a physical exam (she didn’t even check under my arm pits) and a diagnosis of eczema.
I just feel like because of my age and obviously because I don’t have a lump I was disregarded. this is not the first time I’ve been disregarded due to my age. I just felt like she was saying because I haven’t got a lump there’s no way it could be cancer. She even told me to Google breast cancer and that it will tell you that you need to have a lump. Now I know this to be false and I just wondered if anyone has had any problems with doctors being the same towards them. I just feel like something more is wrong. I did not feel welcome at all there and if I see no improvement in a few weeks I will be going back to my gp again and expressing my concerns again.
thanks for reading
