Mole Excision booked - do I need to book time off to recover?

Hi everyone,

I need some advice or answers

Basically I found a mole on my left foot under my ankle, decided to go to my gp who had a look and seemed concerned therefore referred to dermatology 2ww so a dermatologist can have a look, the dermatologist suggested I have it removed and analysed, that was back in April 2023. Fast forward to now August 2023 and I've just got my appointment to get it removed but now I'm worried as I don't understand what will happen during the procedure and the after care.

I work with early years and some after school children so as you can probably imagine my job is fast paced and on my feet for nearly 9 hours a day, so I don't know if I should take time off

Will I be on crutched and unable to put pressure on my foot.

I also have 3 children of my own aged between 2 and 6 so my home life is also very busy

Any advice or answers would be appreciated after any personal experiences of when they had their procedure done or the after care or if I should take time off

  • Hi Paige,

They don't cauterise moles. It will be removed completely by excision surgery and you will have stitches. The wound will be at least twice as long as the size of the mole and will bleed easily so you will need to sit or lie down with your foot on cushions to raise it higher than your heart. They may give you crutches or they may tell you to keep off your feet for a few days to give the stitches time to knit. They will give you a leaflet with post op advice but I suggest you arrange a few days sick leave (at least) and help with care of your little ones. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
