Breast biopsy

I found a large lump (cocktail sausage size) in my breast. I phoned the dr, was seen working the hour and a few days later had a mammogram, ultrasound and two biopsies. It has been a week today and I’ve not heard anything. The radiologist said I’d hear within 7-10 days. Spoke to the breast surgeon who said elements of benign but also elements of ‘other’ and up to two weeks is possible if the pathologist needs to do extra tests. Do I assume the longer the result, the less likely it is to be anything nasty? I’m role playing the ‘phone call saying to come in for a chat’ in my head to calm my nerves. Can anyone help? Thank you for your time. Thinking of you all and sending oodles of good luck wishes x

  • Hi I found a lump about 4/5 weeks ago, felt oblong like yours and was hard. I had my appointment at the breast clinic on 4th of August and they did a ultrasound and 3 biopsies on the lump. They told me to make an appointment for a weeks time for the results but I couldn't go then as I was going on holiday so they made me an appointment for the 21st. During my holiday I got a phone call saying my results won't be ready by then but would be ready on the 22nd. All sorts were going through my head like why would they need to delay the results when they were supposed to be ready in a week? Have they found something and need to figure out a plan for chemo, mastectomy etc? Anyway on our way back home, 6 days before my appointment was due i got a telephone call telling me my results were that it was a Benign solid cyst and no further action was needed!

Hopefully you'll be like me and they'll be doing the extra tests and making sure nothing is cancerous and then you'll get your results before your expecting them! I was supposed to have a face to face appointment, was told at my biopsy that they wouldn't give me results over the phone but they did! Good luck and try not to stress too much, easier said than done I know!

  • Thank you, and that’s great news about your lump. They told me I’d receive a letter in the post if it was benign and a plan to remove the lump as it’s rather large. I’d receive a phone call if more tests were needed or if it was something to be discussed face to face.
Now day 9. It’s very easy to overthink (I’m an over thinker at the best of times anyway) so I’m really struggling with the waiting as each day passes. Hoping the postman will have a letter for me.

  • I’m pleased to say the breast surgeon just called and said after lots of testing, I have a large benign fibroadenoma.

I’m going to have it removed within the next two weeks (on waiting list now). Forgot to ask how long recovery is, was so nervous and my heart was racing so fast!

  • Hi Anxiousmummy,

I am delighted to hear that this isa benign fibroadenoma. I don't know exactly how long the recovery time is likely to be for this, but I wouldn't expect it to be long. It wouldn't do any harm to phone and ask if you are worried about this.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
