Bowel cancer or Crohn's??

Hi

I have been experiencing upper abdominal pain that worsens with stress for about 6 weeks now.

I genuinely thought it was my lungs as it also worsened when breathing in initially.

Upon calling the doctors and describing the pain I was seen by a nurse to check me over within an hour and she said she thought that I was experiencing some sort of episode due to a food intolerance or similar and to fill out a diet diary and get booked in for some tests.

I then saw 3 different doctors, was prescribed omeprazole which helped a little and had bloods and stool samples taken. When I had the bloods taken they booked me in for a week later to discuss my results as even if they were to be negative there is obviously something going on.

I saw this doctor who said all of my results were fine (other than low folic acid which I know is common) but they hadn't carried out the tests that he would recommend, one of those being the qfit test to check for blood in my stools.

I then had a call 2 days ago from a doctor that said everything was normal apart from the qfit, he kept saying not to lose any sleep over it but they need to see me urgently to carry out a rectal examination before referring me on the 2 week wait pathway.

My brother has quite severe Crohn's disease and my mum has ankylosing spondylitis which I am aware have links. Myself and my brother also have severe psoriasis which has links to Crohn's.

I have always experienced lower abdominal pain, bloating after eating pretty much anything and alternating bouts of diarrhoea/constipation among other symptoms and have just lived with it as I had a lot of investigations when I was younger but always down the gynecology route. I have also found doctors very dismissive of my symptoms over the years and I'm not one to push for further investigations.

I also lost a lot of weight during the initial months of covid due to my situation and depression. I'm not sure of my weight in 2020 but I know that my doctor's records show that in 2017 I weighed 65kg and now I weigh 50.2kg. Being 5 foot 5 I am now at the very low end of healthy and if I was to lose anymore I would be dangerously thin! I know how I lost weight but it is very much a concern that I'm not putting any on, my diet has been normal and it's not unusual for me to over indulge.

So I am just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what the result was once they'd been referred and had further testing?

The doctor said they would probably x-ray me to see where the problem is coming from initially and then colonoscopy.

I have been thinking it is Crohn's but having had a normal fecal calprotectin result it's seeming that kind of rules that out and bowel cancer is the concern.

I am really panicking and thinking the worst, I get so upset when I look at my son as I am all he has. I know that's not a good way to think and it really doesn't help with the symptoms but I am genuinely terrified of what may be found

  • I am sure a coloniscopy with give you a better idea. I have crohns which I class myself lucky but did take ages to diagnose. I am just hoping not to stress as just found out I have breast cancer

  • Hi

im going through a similar thing. I’ve had an urgent referral for a colonoscopy. I have googled (far too much) all my symptoms, they point to IBD or bowel cancer. I am utterly terrified. Someone said to me today that you need to focus on all the reasons why it isn’t cancer, rather than all the reasons why it is. This helped.

Waiting for results is painful. This whole process is painful. I hope you get some answers soon x

  • Stop googling and wait for your colonoscopy there are many things it could be apart from bowel cancer.  My crohns took ages to diagnosis but it was a relief just to know.
