Lumps on neck with other symptoms.

Hi, I went for a lump checking in my neck 3 weeks ago. It is on the left side and above my collar bone. You can not see it but I can feel it straight away without pressing down and it is a lot bigger then a normal lymph node. Noticed around 6 months ago.

Anyways GP felt around my neck and sent me for a blood test. The blood test came back clear. I mentioned at the appointment that I was also having other things happening on my left side. I have sharp stabbing pains in my ribs every night when I lay on that side and my calf is constantly aching when I rest, it's a very dull full feeling but goes away when I stand. She said it all could be connected but did not send me for any further tests.

Over the last week my neck has become achy and throbs where the lump is quite similar to the pain in my calf. I have also noticed another lump at the back of my neck and I am now becoming really anxious. I am never ill, do not have infections or ever have too take pain killers so this just not feel right too me. I can not get another GP appointment until 22nd of August. Anyone got any advice on how to push for further tests/scans? Even if it's nothing sinister their must be an explanation of all these aches/pains and lumps. All the advice just says the big C and it's freaking me out.

Thanks.

  • Hello Eacwx,

You did the right thing in having this lump checked by a GP 3 weeks ago. It sounds like your GP was not overly concerned as they did not send you for further tests. But as you've experienced additional symptoms since and spotted another lump at the back of your neck, it's a good idea to have this looked at by another doctor. It's good you have secured another appointment for the 22nd - perhaps you could try and see a different GP just to get a second opinion and make sure that you don't need additional tests? You can find out more about getting a second opinion on this page. Don't hesitate to ask your doctor for an explanation of all these aches and lumps as they will be in the best position to give you the advice you need - stay well away from the temptation to look anything up online as it will only make you more anxious bringing the worst possible and least likely cases.

I hope that you get to talk to a medical expert soon about this and that it turns out to be nothing of concern. Hopefully other members of our community will have been through something similar before and will be along shortly to share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hello. I also have a lump on my neck at the front. I noticed it about 2 months ago and went to the GP. I saw a nurse, she asked about all other symptoms I have which include a very bad cold/flu a few weeks prior, unintentional weight loss, aches and pains. Sent me for a blood test which I was called to repeat without giving me a reason. Recently I've had a painful breast, similar symptoms to mastitis but I am not breastfeeding. I also had a bad episode of vertigo. I don't know if it's in my head but I feel like the lump in my neck has gotten bigger and now I'm freaking out. I understand how you must be feeling. It seems to take forever to get an appointment and be seen and all you can do is 'Google' to try and find an explanation for all these other than cancer but it all seems to just point to it. I luckily have an appointment with the GP this afternoon as they think my vertigo is an ear infection. I think everything is all linked to my neck lump. I'm going to push for an ultrasound referral today.

As you have found another lump, please push for further tests or ultrasound at your next appointment. I wish you all the best.

  • Hi,

So update, went to my appointment this morning. As soon as she felt my neck she could tell it had swelled. All around the back of my neck round to my shoulder felt achy when she felt it. Referred for an Urgent Ultrasound.

Hopefully will get some answers now.

  • How did you get on at your appointment?

  • Very quick turn around. Went for my ultrasound today, only waited 2 days! Now just waiting for the results.
