Terrified young man

Hi all,

Sorry if this is a silly post but looking for some words of inspiration and encouragement. I'm a 39 year old male, fairly healthy, and went to the GP this week for a checkup unrelated to this, and got a call back to say they found traces of blood in my urine. I've got no symptoms of anything at all, and the GP booked me in for a range of blood tests including PSA which I did yesterday. Annoyingly I have to go back in tomorrow for a repeat PSA as according to my results there was insufficient sample for analysis. The rest of the results came back all clear, though my 2nd urine sample hasn't shown up results yet online. Anyway, I am utterly terrified as when I have read about all the various potential causes for this blood, none seem to fit with the exception of something related to my prostate. I also saw on the doctors notes that I will need an urgent referral to urology if my PSA levels are raised or still show signs of blood in the urine. I am just panicking and don't know what to do! Sorry for the ramble.

  • Hi there, I’m not a doctor and can’t diagnose but there are many reasons that you can have blood in your urine, the main one is infection . Sometimes the blood can be from the prostate , as it is a very vascular organ and can bleed . ( good blood supply) and it usually grows with age usually around 40 which is probably why your Gp erred on the side of caution and requested a PSA .You don’t say if he examined your prostate ? Anyway , blood in the urine is always investigated and your Gp seems very thorough . I really hope things are ok and wish you well . There are of course lots of reasons for blood in the urine so much better to get checked out.

  • Thanks, no that's the bit that surprised me that no one has suggested a physical examination. I have a call with them tomorrow as well having to go in for the repeat tests, so I will ask about that then. Also having read about the PSA test, I also feel they should have explained this in more detail as it seems there is a lot of discussion about the pros and cons of having one, especially at my age.

  • Yes, where I live they are not done routinely on men with no symptoms , I requested that my husband had one done along with an examination but the Gp refused . PSA can also be raised for other non sinister reasons . I hope that you get your mind out at rest.

  • Honestly it's the waiting that is the worst. I am almost certain I will get referred to urology and I just can't cope with the waiting. I always expect the worse sadly.

  • Yes I understand that . If you are referred in you will hopefully be seen within two weeks , but it may not come to that and it’s good that your other results are fine . Let us know how it goes

  • Absolutely agree with everything LCR says, there are so many reasons for blood in urine, usually a urinary tract infection which antibiotics will deal with.  Your doctor is being extra cautious.  When you have your results he will most likely be waving you out the door.  I know the waiting is hard, am doing that myself at the moment.  Keep busy.

  • Thank you. My concern is that a couple of years ago I had a urine test done and traces of blood were found then, the doctor then never followed up so I just forgot all about it. Nothing has really changed symptom wise in that time though?

  • Some people do have traces of blood in their urine with no cause . The testing kits are so advanced these days that they pick up the smallest amount .
To put this in perspective , years ago a pregnancy test was not done until after 3 months as it would not show up. Nowadays you can do a test the day your cycle is due , so they have advanced so much . Please speak to your Gp again tomorrow., maybe he can give you some reassurance .

  • It's not a silly post at all. On here you can express fears and worries and we can all empathise with you. Keep posting here because we shall be with you whatever happens.

  • When i was around 25 I had blood in my urine. It was from my kidney. Had a battery of tests at the hospital and nothing showed up kidney wise. Was given antibiotics and that was that. The bleeding stopped. I had no symptoms either. Unfortunately, us guys need to go through more thorough exams than women when we first present with blood in the urine as infections are rarer in us guys, so they have to be belts and braces.

Given your age, you're probably still on the younger side of things, so you have that in your favour. Whilst younger people can get prostate cancer, it's rare.
