Kidney biopsy on Tuesday and I'm scared

Hi everyone

I'm having a kidney biopsy on Tuesday and am really scared. I've read all the Macmillan and nhs information on it, but it's all so matter of fact. I would really like to hear your personal experiences eg did you have sedation, any discomfort during, what to expect afterwards, bruising, pain and once back home, when can I expect to get back to normal activities and exercise....I'm going to miss my zumba and aqua classes!

I think I am more scared of the numbing injections as I know through experience that they hurt :-(

Thank you x

  • Hello Kittyslim

I just wanted to post to wish you well for your biopsy tomorrow. It's understandable that you may be feeling anxious.

I'm sure the team will be supportive during your appointment tomorrow and hopefully you won't have to wait too long for the results.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

Thank you so much Jenn ♡

I had a sigmoidoscopy today to check something in my colon which has come back all normal. So some good news :)

    Will keep you posted x

  • Hi Kittyslim, wishing you all the best for tomorrow. I found out today that I have a shadow on my kidney, so I'm guessing I may need a biopsy too. So I'll be following you closely to get all the gen! Take care.

Thanks honey, I will keep you posted! It's likely not going to be half as bad as I'm thinking it will be, I do get myself in a tizz at times *rolls eyes*

  • How did you get on  how was it? I had some more info, I have a 2.9cm lesion on the right upper lobe and been referred to urology MDT for discussion. I don't really have a clue what this means?

Sorry for the delay in replying hunni, I've been running round like a loon!

Ummm it went ok, the injections they use for numbing the area stung like a b*** .....a tiny scratch they said :-O But once they got stuck in to doing the actual biopsy it went fine, few odd sensations but no pain! Had to lay on the side they did it for 2 hrs then I was able to sit up but not get up for another 2 then home.

I have a tiny  -1cm scar from the cut they made for the biopsy needle to go in, but it has all healed and I've no bruising.

My journey so far has been a CT for upper gastro team due to acid reflux and problems swallowing, they wanted an abdo and pelvic scan done for some reason. Fortunately they did and found a 4.3cm mass on my only kidney consistent with being renal cell carcinoma and suspicious lymph node inflammation.

Transferred to urology MDT who ordered a PET scan, that highlighted what we already knew, plus it highlighted something in my colon. So next step was a flexible sigmoidoscopy which was all clear, it was just some inflammation.

And then the biopsy. It will have been a week tomorrow, so fingers crossed I will hear something soon otherwise I will be contacting my uro-oncology nurse to see what's what. The waiting around is just the worst  :-(

Wishing you all the best, let me know how you're getting on. Life is a bit more settled at the moment so won't miss any replies :-)

Hey hun, I'm doing good now thank you. I had a 4.4cm clear cell rcc, grade 3, which was removed at the end of October. Robotic partial nephrectomy. All signs of cancer gone and no adjuvant therapy needed. Scans every 6 months for 5 yrs then every yr for another 5. Only 20% chance of the cancer returning so I'm happy with those odds!

I only have 1 kidney, so only have half now but it it nearl y at the same function as before the op. I get tired quite easily, but getting better by the day.

Try not to worry too much, you will be well looked after I promise. Wishing you all the very best on your journey, plenty of support on here and Kidney Cancer UK group on Facebook. You're not alone ♡
