Endometrial thickness 15mm

I first experienced post-coital bleeding about 4 months ago, went to GP and was told I had a cervical ectropion.

I have cramps, bloating, a feeling off fullness in my lower abdomen, diarrhoea and the post-coital spotting has developed into persistent bleeding, usually fresh red, sometimes with large clots, sometimes more like a blood stained discharge - for about 2 months.

Returned to GP who said she would refer me to have the ectropion cauterised, and an urgent USS.

Today I had abdo and transvaginal USS, nothing was said directly to me, but I remember the endometrial thickness was 15mm. Anyone have any experience of a similar situation? I'm trying not to worry (I'm usually very laid back and logical!) but just have a feeling something isn't right.

  • I had all this, and more. My thickness was 18mm.

I had tests and referred to cancer pathway, and was told had atypical endometrial hyperplasia which is precancerous and can turn into cancer. I have regular biopsies every 3 months, and there’s a range of options available.

    Fingers crossed for you

  • You don’t say whether you are pre or post menopause…post menopause and thickness should be between 4-5mm, pre menopause is different because thickness changes with your cycle.

  • I’m post menopausal my thickness was 8mm, I’ve also been diagnosed with atypia hyperplasia, although all womb biopsies have been normal it was found in a polyp, and currently have a mirena coil whil I get my blood sugars under control (which they are now). I am booked in for a hysterectomy on 18th September..my consultant is hoping the mirena will give me some much needed progesterone which wi hopefully keep the hyperplasia from spreading..I’m well aware though that there is still a 40% chance of cancer being found after the hysterectomy when it’s all biopsied  :(

I hope you get good results from whatever treatment they are giving you x

  • Thank you for your response.

I understand there could be a number of potential outcomes/findings... already the anticipation is driving me crazy!

I hope all continues to go well with you and regular biopsies are reassuring.

  • Thank you for your responses.

I am 38 and pre-menopausal. I was diagnosed with PCOS in my early 20s and have always had very infrequent (2 or 3 a year), irregular but very heavy periods. I know anovulation is a risk factor for endometrial cancer, so that has always been something on my mind.

Depending on the outcome of further investigations, I'll be looking into having a mirena coil for the hormonal benefits.

I hope all goes well with your hysterectomy and results of biopsies.

  • Update: I had a phone call from my GP today, 24hrs after USS.

I have a "bulky uterus with coarse echotexture, irregular endometrium separated by avascular mixed echo material ? clots/blood, and a small trace of fluid in the pouch of Douglas". So, referred for 2 week wait to gynaecology.

Also, was found to have a complex cyst on my kidney, with a "thick wall and several thick internal septation with solitary internal component. Colour doppler demonstrates vascularity within". Completely incidental finding, and not sure exactly what all that means, but also been referred for 2 week wait to urology.

    So, no I'm doubly worried!

How long exactly did people wait when put on 2ww?

  • Why can’t they just write in simple terms? I found it very frustrating reading some of the letters.

My PMB this time was at the end of January and it will be September before they take it all out. I’ve had a few biopsies in that time but this year has been a constant worry. I’ll be glad to see the back of it.
