Large ovarian cyst with ca125=113

I am in my mid-30s. For about 2 months I noticed myself having a larger belly. My appetite reduced and I started to sleep badly. I also experienced breathlessness.

As I got history of cancer in my abdomen and 2 operations of removing ovary cysts, I decided to go for private CT scan in late June. 2 days after the scan, I received call from my GP, saying that they found a 30cmx20cmx10cm cyst of my right ovary. An urgent referral was made to gynaecology. An urgent blood test of ca125 was done in early July which revealed to be 113 (normal level=<35).

I continued to lose weight (5kg in a month) and suffered from breathing difficulty while waiting. Still heard nothing from the gynaecology, not even the date of the first appointment. Is it normal? Anything else I could do in the meantime?

Thank you very much.

  • Hi So sorry you are going through this  not knowing what's going on and waiting is just awful. Continuing to contact gp and gynaecology department,  consultants secretary to pursue where your case is at, is worth doing. Good luck!

  • This must be so worrying for you ,even after paying for your own scan you are still having to wait a lot longer than the advised 2 weeks ,which area are you in ??? I would definitely be getting in touch with your GP or even the department at the hospital to try and hurry things along ,you should at least have a date for an appointment by now in my opinion ,the Doctors striking can't be helping an already on its knees NHS trying to catch up since covid .

  • Thanks so much for the advice and support. I have visited GP and they helped to make sure the referral was marked as urgent. Today I received the appointment letter eventually. Finger-crossed.

  • Thanks very much for the support :) I wondered if it is not treated as suspected cancer so it is longer than 2 weeks? I am in Wales so it may also be a bit different? I don’t know. Fortunately, I received the appointment letter today that I will be seen next week. Finger-crossed for that. But yeah, I definitely would recommend everyone I know to get a private scan if they notice any issues as NHS waiting time could be very torturing, especially when you could not convince the doctors that you have any urgent issue….

  • Its good to hear you finally have an appointment ,I hope you have a good outcome ,you're very young to be having problems like this ,let us know how you get on next week if you need someone to chat to ,Best Wishes .

  • Just want to update about my appointment. Ultrasound was done which revealed the cyst is so large that the top of it reaches the lower part of my breasts. It then explained my breathing difficulties. It is also too large to be measured by the ultrasound. So an operation will deem necessary but they have to discuss the arrangement first. Could only know if it is cancerous after taking it out. Also was prepared that ovaries and uterus may need to be removed too. Will be seen again next week in joint clinic.

Indeed I feel much better after the consultation as things got clearer and I got prepared for the worst outcome. Will share with you all with further updates so people have similar concerns like me could have some reference in the future :)

  • Wow that explains a lot of your symptoms ,hopefully when you lose this you'll feel much better afterwards that is some size ,It's good that you've been seen and know that at least things are progressing ,hopefully it will happen quickly to give you some ease in your body ,I hope all goes well you'll be in good hands ,thanks for the update x

  • Just want to give some updates. I received the surgery about a month ago and the cyst taken out was said to be huge >30cm  - they showed me the picture and let me take a photo of it :). The sleep, breathing, walking, eating problems were all gone with it. Luckily I was told today that it is benign so no follow up is needed as my right ovary was removed in the surgery.

Now I could move onto my next diagnostic surgery in another part of the body. Finger crossed XX

And good luck to all people who have similar conditions!

  • That is really great news hearing its benign it couldn't have gone better and thanks for letting us know ,again whatever you're facing next I hope it goes really well for you stay in touch and let us know how you go ,I'm so pleased for you after all this time of worry .
