14cm ovarian cyst

Hi all, 

Following investigations for abnormal bleeding, I have seen the consultant today who says I have a 14cm cyst in my right ovary. He said the ultrasound had some concerning features (separations?) which could indicate cancerous. He did also say though this was unlikely at my age (32). 

I've got an MRI booked in to look in more detail and confirm if it is cancerous or not. 

Am obviously worried - I wasn't expecting it to be anywhere near that size! 

I guess I'm looking for anyone who has been in a similar situation - was the outcome positive? 

Any anyone who may have had a large cyst removed, how did that go? 

I'm trying not to worry but equally thinking if it is cancerous then as it is big worrying it will have spread :⁠-⁠(

    Hello Sunflowergirl123, 

    I am so sorry that you have been diagnosed with a 14cm cyst on your ovary and that the ultrasound flagged some concerning features. It is reassuring though that they told you that cancer was unlikely at your age. The MRI will shed some light on what type of cyst it is and I hope that you find out more soon and that you won't have to wait too long for your scan. I can imagine that the size of your cyst is making you a bit anxious but try if you can not to worry too much or anticipate what it might be until you get your MRI results as there are so many other things it could be other than cancer. 

    There are many members of our forum who have been in a similar situation  and have had cysts of a similar size removed. If you type the words ovarian cyst, in our 'search forum' function at the top of the site, you will be able to see all past threads on the subject and you will notice that there have indeed been a lot of people going through something similar in the past - don't hesitate to respond to anyone you would like to chat to here. I hope that you will hear from the experiences of others on the forum who have had ovarian cysts removed - it does help to talk to others who have been in a similar boat.

    Waiting for tests and results is truly nerve-racking and I wanted you to know you are not alone and there are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news. I hope it all turns out to be nothing of concern and that you get the treatment you need soon to get this cyst removed.

    Hi Sunflowergirl,

    Hope you are feeling well xx did you have a surgery?? I am in the same situation as you large complex ovarian cyst 16 cm in my right ovary. Had ultrasound, mri and ct scan with contrast but the scan results couldn’t tell if it is cancer. I have a laparatomy and frozen section biopsy with possibility of a staging surgery booked for Jan and I am quite worried. I am 33 years old

    I had my surgery just over 2 weeks ago. The MRI that I had beforehand showed some features that could be cancer but others that looked more benign, so like you it was unclear either way. They said it could also be a borderline tumour.

    I had a laparoscopy but with a couple of the incisions made larger to remove things. They removed all of the cyst along with almost all of the ovary. They also took biopsies from the omentum and the fluid in the pelvis to check for any cancer cells. 

    I didn't have a frozen section at the time, so have got to wait 4-6 weeks to get results of whether or not it is cancerous. 

    Try and keep busy to help keep the worries at bay - I know that is easier said than done!

    Hi Sunflowergirl123,

    Thank you for sharing your experience xx  They will remove my cyst along with the right ovary, in case it is cancer  they will remove lymph nodes. Hopefully it won’t be the case.

    I hope you hear good new about your biopsy results xx
