Results from Hysteroscopy / Endo Biopsy - suspected womb cancer

Hi everyone.

I'm 37 and due to heavy, prolonged bleeding, I was referred by my GP for a transvaginal and abdo ultrasound.

Had the scans done and it showed grossly thickened endometrium (27mm), so I was then referred 2ww to Gynae for suspected womb cancer.

I had a hysteroscopy and endo biopsy done and was told it will take approx 4 weeks for the results (this is now into the 4th week).

I just wondered how others have received their results, did you have a telephone call or a letter and would this be from the Gynar consultant or the GP?

Not really sleeping much at the moment and I just want to know what is happening with me, so I'm just anxious to hear something. I am trying to stay away from medical websites as I just end up upsetting myself but I am worried as I meet a lot of the criteria for womb cancer, for example being obese, never had a child, family history, thickness of endometrium etc.

Thanks in advance
Sarah

  • That seems a long time to wait for results but I realise different time scales depend on which hospitals are involved ,I received my results from Hysteroscopy by letter within 2 weeks which thankfully were nothing concerning also my GP Surgery had received the results and they contacted me as well after I'd received the letter though ,did the person who did the Hysteroscopy give you any indication of whether they had found anything worrying or not they did with me ,I hope you find out soon its terrible waiting and worrying .

  • I’ve waited anything from 10 days to 6 weeks for biopsy results…I always asked for them to be emailed to me and they always have been, apart from when they found atypia hyperplasia in a polyp they removed…then they rang with an appointment…I got so stressed by it all that they got a nurse to ring me and tell me over the phone…I then attended the appointment knowing what I’d be told…the reason for the appointment was to discuss what they recommended as treatment which is a hysterectomy, that’s booked for September.

I hope you aren’t waiting too much longer x

  • I meet lots of the criteria as well, fat (very) PCOS, no children, T2 diabetic but as yet no cancer diagnosed..this could change after hysterectomy as 40% chance it will show on biopsy with atypia hyperplasia, I’m keeping everything crossed I’m in the 60%.

There are many slim ladies with children who get diagnosed with womb cancer…my consultant told me Dr Google should be kicked into the abyss.

  • I was referred June last year and had hysteroscopy/biopsy in July and then repeated in February this year. Both times results came by letter from the hospital. The waiting time is truly horrendous

  • Hi Jenny

No he didn't really give any indication, he just said that it will take 4 weeks for the results to come back. I actually called the hospital yesterday and the secretary had a look for me and the sample is still with the lab apparently but she confirmed that all results are sent via letter and if I havent heard anything by this time next week, to call her again. I feel bad chasing them but its making me so anxious just to know whats going on.

  • Hi   I still havent heard anything so I actually called the hospital yesterday to see what was going on, the secretary said that the sample is still with the lab! I did ask her if the results could be emailed to me, but she said that wasn't possible and a letter would come through the post, I guess different hospitals work differently. No wonder you got stressed, its such big news to receive via letter/email, I understand that the department will be extremely busy but I just think its a bit impersonal.

Did you have thickening of the endometrium lining too? Mine is 27mm, which the consultant said was "grossly thickened"

  • My lining was 8mm but I’m postmenopausal, in 2019 it was 7.6mm (postmenopausal) but anything over 4-5mm in postmenopausal is a referral, I think when you are younger it’s slightly different because you are still having periods, so I can’t be much help there, sorry!

My consultants Secretary has been absolutely brilliant, and I told him this as well.

I’m sure you won’t have to wait too much longer now for your results, sometimes you have to make a nuisance of yourself, I’d be phoning the secretary again in a few days to chase things further…there is no reason why a letter can’t be emailed to you once it’s been signed off by the consultant…it’s the same letter you’d just not have to wait a further week while it’s in the postal system x

  • Hi   thank you so much for the info and yes, the waiting time is hard to deal with

  • Hiya, I'm in a similar boat and was wondering how you got on?

I'm only 2 weeks post hysteroscopy so will try to be patient but it's so difficult isn't it?

  • Hi there

sid you get your results back?
