FIT Test Reading 8

I am 29 with a history of IBS, I’ve had severe IBS from 16 years old but, in recent years, I managed to control my symptoms through diet and fitness. I have occasional flare ups but on the whole, I am much better, fit and healthy.

In recent years I have been regular and passed normal stools around 2/3 times a day. For the past 6 weeks, I have experienced a sudden change in bowel habit, being extremely constipated and only managing to pass a small stool once a week. I have abdominal pain, bouts of gas, fatigue and  constant bloating.I occasionally feel nauseous after eating to,

I saw my GP and was asked to perform a FIT test, my FIT results came back with a reading of 8 and my GP has fast tracked me for a colonoscopy at the hospital. She explained due to symptoms and results, I will be fast tracked for a colonoscopy with a specialist at the hospital. She explained the possible obvious risks and moderate risks I could face.

I am not sure what to think? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

  • Well, 8 is generally considered a negative result and from what I've read, that means the odds of cancer are very low. (I read somewhere that a FIT result of under 10 means the odds of cancer are like 1%, but admittedly, this was by googling). So that part is positive.

I guess she figures your symptoms do need investigation and a colonoscopy will check for many things. Plus a FIT only checks for blood in the stool and can't rule out cancer (or stuff like Crohn's).
