Potentially melanoma?

Hi there,

just wanted peoples thoughts really. I had a mole screened on my toe as it’s very black and when I’ve zoomed in just looks very abnormal! I went and got it screened and they told me they need to rule out melanoma. I’ve been put on the waiting list for a biopsy now. It’s been really itching recently and half of it has somehow come off. I’ve felt it today and it’s very raised so I believe the other half may also just drop off. Anyone have any thoughts on what would happen in regards to biopsy if it has in fact come off. Would I be sent away or would they still take a sample of my skin where it was?
many thanks :)

  • Hi,

If dermatology are arranging the biopsy I suggest you contact them and explain the changes. They may want to see you again before deciding if surgery needs to go ahead.

It's not unusual for a mole to regress (disappear). Some are benign but some are malignant and they disappear because the immune system does it's job recognising the cancer cells and destroying them. However, if dermatology have a good idea where the mole had been, they may still want to remove the tissue for biopsy to ensure there are no cancer cells still there (in case it was malignant).

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

Angie, Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009

  • Hi Angie,

thankyou for your response! It’s taken a while but they decided they wanted it removed and had the biopsy today. Just waiting for results now which I think will drive me mad!
