CT scan after colonoscopy?

Hi, I'm 26, female.

I had blood in my stools about 1.5 years ago, never got it followed up.

I attended A&E for something completely unrelated on the 9th, ended up talking through some symptoms, lost weight 2.5 kilos, blood in stools, fatigue, variable bowel habits. They performed a fit test which was positive, over 400.

I had a colonoscopy on Sunday 16th, found an ulcer and diverticulitis or something, and took 6 biopsies. Was told all was normal apart from the above and they found nothing untoward, was taken off the urgent referral list and was told I'd not need any further testings at this stage and would just be needing to attend and get results/talk about things going forward due to my symptoms.

I had a call today to say I need a CT scan and I've got one booked for Monday. I'm sure, I was told I would only need this if something was found in the scan that could be more sinister.

They saw my whole bowel/colon with no issues as the prep worked well so I'm concerned something has shown in my biopsies and they want to check CT before they make me attend and aware.

Has anyone had a normal colonoscopy, no cancer and still had a CT? Because I've seen online this isn't the usual route and I'm nervous again, I have a 3.5 year old.

Any words or encouragement would be great.

Thank you

  • Welcome to our forum, Shandley.

I'm sorry to hear about your concerns and the uncertainty you're facing. It's natural to feel nervous, but try not to worry too much until you receive further information from your medical team. The CT scan is a standard procedure used to gather more detailed information about your health, and it doesn't necessarily mean there is something sinister.

Remember that your well-being is your doctor’s priority, and they are best equipped to guide you through the process. Stay strong and try to take comfort in knowing that you are being carefully looked after by medical professionals. I wish you the best with your CT scan and subsequent results. If you have any questions or need further support, don't hesitate to reach out to your medical team.

Hopefully, others who have had similar experiences will come along shortly to offer advice. That being said, if you feel like asking some questions to our team of nurses, they'd be happy to talk things over with you Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m on this freephone 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best,

  • Hi Shandley, how are you? Did you get more clarity with your diagnosis? I'm in a similar situation. Had a positive fit test >300 colonoscopy showed diverticulitis and a 1cm sessile polyp. Took 3 biopsies and everything else looked fine. Before I got the biopsy results I got a call to say I needed a ct scan and MRI. Now awaiting the outcome of a multi disciplinary team meeting. I'm hoping your going to tell me not to worry as it turned out to be nothing too serious. Oh my biopsies came back and apparently there were some potentially concerning changes. Take care x
